Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the floor plan changes, such as the café, lecture room, and the relocation of book sections. However, it lacks an overview paragraph, which is essential for a high band score in Task 1. The description is somewhat list-like, focusing on individual changes rather than synthesizing the information into a clear summary of trends. While all parts of the task are addressed, the lack of a clear 'main features' summary and the absence of a concluding overview limit the development of the response. To improve, ensure you group related changes together and provide a clear summary of the most significant transformations.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is presented as a single block of text, which significantly hinders readability and logical progression. Paragraphing is a requirement for Task 1 to separate the introduction/overview from the body paragraphs. While some cohesive devices are used (e.g., 'At the right side', 'At the left corner'), the flow is repetitive and mechanical. The lack of clear paragraph breaks makes it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the two time periods. To improve, structure your response into at least three paragraphs: an introduction, an overview of the main changes, and detailed body paragraphs.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing for a clear description of the changes. You successfully use terms like 'renovated', 'relocated', and 'converted'. However, there are some inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'had good through significant changes' and 'adult non fuction books'. These minor errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on more precise collocations and ensure you proofread for spelling errors, such as 'fuction' instead of 'fiction'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the comparision of a floor plan' (should be 'a comparison of the floor plan') and 'are added into the area of adult non fuction books section' (awkward preposition usage). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and tense consistency. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors suggests a need for more careful control over basic grammatical structures. Increasing the variety of complex sentences while ensuring accuracy will help improve this score.
