IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows the floor plan of a public library 20 years ago and how it looks now.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two maps illustrate the floor setting of the Central Library, the comparing of today's design with the 20 years old map.

Overall, a major transformation has taken place, the tables and chairs have been removed completely, the enquiry desk has been switched with the cafe, the children's books section has been replaced with the lecture room. Moreover, the reading room has now changed into the computer room.

Now, the location of almost every section has changed and major upgrade have taken place. New services have been introduced such as, the self service machines, information desk, and all reference books.

The CDs, video, computer games room has present on the north west corner, which has been shifted to the southwest corner in the location of the reading room. However, now in north-west corner there is a section for the storytelling events with two sofas.

The tables and chair that were present in the center of library's hall 20 year ago has been removed. The adult non-fiction books section has been replaced with adult fiction books. Despite all changes in new map the entrance position has been retained.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the library floor plan and made relevant comparisons between the two time periods. You covered the key changes, such as the removal of tables and the relocation of specific rooms. However, the report lacks a clear, analytical overview that synthesizes the most significant trends, such as the shift from a traditional reading space to a more technology-oriented facility. While you mention that 'a major transformation has taken place,' providing a more detailed summary of the overall shift would elevate the response. The information is generally accurate, though some descriptions of locations are slightly confusing, such as the reference to the 'north west corner' versus the 'southwest corner'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the comparison. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover,' 'However,' and 'Despite all changes,' which assist in linking ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more effectively used to group related changes (e.g., grouping all technological additions together). Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the transition between the description of the CDs/video room and the storytelling area. Improving the use of cohesive devices to create smoother transitions between sentences would improve the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'transformation,' 'relocated,' and 'retained.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'floor setting' is not the standard term for a floor plan, and 'has present' is grammatically incorrect. You also use 'major upgrade have taken place,' which contains a subject-verb agreement error. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary related to describing maps and spatial changes, such as 'converted into,' 'situated,' or 'undergone significant modifications,' while ensuring these terms are used with correct grammatical structures.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'the comparing of today's design' (should be 'a comparison'), 'major upgrade have taken place' (should be 'upgrades have'), and 'The CDs, video, computer games room has present' (should be 'were present'). Additionally, there are punctuation issues, such as the comma splice in the second paragraph. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage (past vs. present) will significantly improve your accuracy.
