Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagrammatic representations depict the information pertaining to public library floor plan over 20 years.

Having an overview, it is succinct that remarkable variations can be witnessed in public library with the introduction of some new amenities over the given period.

To commence with, it can be seen that there was children's books in top right corner of library in past which was converted into lecture room nowadays. Computer room was newly developed on the place of reading room 2 decades ago. Enquiry desk with curve shape was replaced with cafe today. However, entrance was remained unchanged in both times.

Moving towards the rest of information, it can be noted that CDs, videos and computer games were reconstructed into two amenities that is sofa, storytelling events and children's fiction books. Adult fiction books in the west o library relocated in the east side at present and also adds information desk and self-service machines by replacing adult non-fiction books. However, the area where tables and chairs were situated 20 years ago was not seen nowadays.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the library floor plan effectively. You have identified the key changes, such as the conversion of the children's books area and the relocation of adult fiction. However, the report lacks a clear, data-driven summary of the overall layout. While you mention the entrance remained unchanged, you could have provided a more comprehensive overview of the spatial shifts. The description of the 'sofa, storytelling events and children's fiction books' is a bit cluttered. To reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are precise and that the 'main features' are highlighted more distinctly in the overview.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of changes. You use some cohesive devices like 'To commence with' and 'Moving towards the rest of information' to transition between ideas. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or unnatural. The referencing is generally clear, but there are instances where the flow is interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'that is sofa, storytelling events'. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'diagrammatic representations', 'amenities', and 'relocated'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'reconstructed into two amenities' (which is not the best fit for a floor plan change) and 'in the west o library' (a spelling error). The phrasing 'on the place of' is also non-standard; 'in place of' or 'replaced by' would be more appropriate. To improve, focus on using more precise vocabulary related to spatial descriptions and architectural changes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'there was children's books' (subject-verb agreement error), 'entrance was remained unchanged' (incorrect passive voice), and 'the area... was not seen nowadays' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the frequency of these minor grammatical slips prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will help improve your accuracy.
