Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the library floor plan, identifying key changes such as the relocation of the enquiry desk and the conversion of rooms. However, the description is somewhat repetitive and lacks a clear, analytical overview. The student focuses on listing changes rather than synthesizing the information into a cohesive summary. While the main features are addressed, the lack of a clear summary paragraph and the somewhat disorganized reporting of the changes prevent a higher score. The response would benefit from a more structured approach, grouping changes by area or function to provide a clearer comparison between the two time periods.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is often disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'on your left side' and 'on your right side'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the spatial changes. The conclusion is brief and does not effectively summarize the main trends observed in the diagram. To improve, the student should use a wider range of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus, such as one paragraph for the past and one for the current layout, or one for each major area.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, with several spelling errors such as 'fliction' instead of 'fiction' and 'cental' instead of 'central'. The range of vocabulary is limited, relying heavily on simple verbs like 'change' and 'see'. There is little attempt to use more sophisticated or precise terminology to describe the layout or the changes. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of variety and the recurring spelling mistakes limit the score. Using more descriptive language, such as 'relocated', 'transformed', or 'converted', would significantly enhance the quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('the library'), incorrect verb tenses, and punctuation issues. For example, 'they gives more thing as compare before' is grammatically incorrect and lacks clarity. The sentence structure is often fragmented, and there is a lack of complex sentences. While the errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be distracting. Improving control over basic sentence construction and ensuring subject-verb agreement would help to raise the score in this criterion.
