Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pair of maps illustrates the structural and functional modernization of the Central Library from the 20 years-period of past to the present day.

Overall, the library has undergone an advanced technological process. Traditional and historical floor plan of the library have been entirely renovated, and now it is an example of a tech building.

On the left side of the library, there was a reading room, which is previously housed by newspapers and magazines, now it is dedicated for a computer room. The center of the library which was previously occupied by tables and chairs for visitors but, now that space is completely empty. Moving towards the top left corner of the library, there was a dedicated room for fun purposes such as, there were CDs, videos and computer games, now allocated for storytelling events for children and in that room there are two sofas also.

Major changes have also been taken place on right side of the library, the top right corner of the library, there was children's book room but, now it is replaced with a lecture room. And at last, there was also an enquiry desk, which is previously housed for tickets, book returns, and much more but, now it is also replaced with a cafe.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all key features of the floor plan, identifying the main changes between the two periods. You successfully highlight the transformation of the reading room into a computer room and the replacement of the enquiry desk with a cafe. However, the overview is slightly generic; it would be stronger to mention specific shifts, such as the library becoming more focused on technology and social spaces. The description of the central area as 'completely empty' is accurate, but the report could be improved by more precise comparisons of the spatial layout. Overall, the task is addressed well, and the main features are clearly reported.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on different sides of the library. Cohesive devices such as 'On the left side', 'Moving towards', and 'Major changes have also been taken place' help guide the reader through the information. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the use of 'And at last' is slightly informal for an academic report. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though the connection between sentences could be smoother to achieve a more natural flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'modernization', 'renovated', and 'allocated'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'fun purposes' (which is vague) and 'tech building' (which is informal). Additionally, the phrase 'housed by' is used incorrectly; it should be 'housed' or 'contained'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher band scores. Expanding your repertoire of descriptive verbs and nouns related to architectural changes would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'from the 20 years-period of past' is awkward and grammatically incorrect. The phrase 'Major changes have also been taken place' is a passive voice error; it should be 'have taken place'. There are also issues with tense consistency and preposition usage, such as 'dedicated for' instead of 'dedicated to'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score in this criterion.
