Central Library 20 years ago
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The map diagrams illustrate that the changes took place in the public library between 20 years ago and the present day.
Overall, the library has undergone significant redevelopment, Traditional reading areas have been reduced, while tables and chairs have been removed from a foyer, and there is an addition of a cafe at the bottom of the map.
On the one hand, the area for computational activities was located at the top left corner, with adult's fiction books directly below it. The children's books section and adult non-fiction books area were located side by side, whereas circular tables and chairs were placed in the centre of a foyer. In addition, the reading room containing newspapers and magazines was designated adjacent to entrance, while an enquiry desk used to be at lower right bottom.
Since then, the place dedicated for computational activities has been transformed to storytelling section with two sofas and fiction books for children. The children's books area has been converted into lecture room, whereas the reading room into a computer room. The adult non-fiction books centre has been developed into adult fiction books with information desk and three self-service machines. The cafe is present at the place of the enquiry desk. Notably, adult fiction books space has been reduced and changed into all reference books.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the library's transformation. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with specific details from the diagrams. However, the response could be improved by ensuring the comparisons are more explicit. For instance, while you mention the cafe replaced the enquiry desk, you could have more clearly contrasted the overall shift in the library's focus from a traditional reading space to a more modern, technology-oriented facility. The information is generally accurate, though ensure that all labels are precisely described to avoid any ambiguity in your reporting.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information by area or change. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'In addition,' and 'Since then' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more refined. For example, the final paragraph is quite dense with information; splitting it or using more varied linking phrases would improve the flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'redevelopment,' 'transformed,' and 'converted' effectively. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'computational activities' (which sounds slightly unnatural in this context) and 'at lower right bottom' (which is redundant). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to architectural changes or spatial descriptions. The vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'The map diagrams illustrate that the changes took place' (the 'that' is unnecessary) and 'adjacent to entrance' (missing an article). Additionally, 'adult's fiction books' should be 'adult fiction books' (plural possessive is not needed here). Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences would help elevate your score.
