Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two floor plans illustrate the comparison of two layout of a central library before its redesign and its current layout.

Overall, the central library has undergone considerable changes, with several new facilities being introduced and some existing features relocated or replaced. The library has been transformed from a simple into a modernised facility.

To begin with, previously, there was a special area for enquiry desk just after the entrance where people could book tickets or return the books. while the reading room was just opposite it, for newspapers and magazines were provided. In the current layout these facilities have been removed, cafe is introduced in the place of enquiry desk and instead of reading room new computer room is added. Additionally, table and chairs are installed in the centre of library.

Initially, adult fiction room and adult non-fiction room were just opposite to each, while they have been replaced. A sofa, storytelling events activity and children's fiction boos are introduced in the corner area of library previously there were CDs, videos, computer games.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response provides a clear overview of the main changes, such as the introduction of new facilities and the relocation of others. You successfully identified the key transformations, including the replacement of the enquiry desk with a cafe and the reading room with a computer room. However, the description of the children's area is slightly confusing, and you missed mentioning the specific relocation of the adult fiction and non-fiction sections in sufficient detail. To improve, ensure you clearly contrast the 'before' and 'after' states for every major area mentioned, rather than grouping them in a way that obscures the specific spatial changes.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, moving from an introduction to specific details. You use some cohesive devices like 'To begin with', 'Additionally', and 'Initially' to guide the reader. However, the flow within paragraphs is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing and missing articles (e.g., 'cafe is introduced', 'centre of library'). The transition between the description of the adult fiction area and the children's section is abrupt and lacks a clear cohesive link. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring consistent referencing would help the progression feel more natural and professional.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'undergone considerable changes', 'modernised facility', and 'relocated'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'children's fiction boos' (likely a typo for 'books') and 'storytelling events activity'. The phrasing 'simple into a modernised facility' is grammatically incomplete. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that your vocabulary is used accurately in context, avoiding repetitive structures.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent errors in articles (e.g., 'in the centre of library', 'in the corner area of library') and some awkward sentence constructions, such as 'while they have been replaced'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some run-on sentences and missing commas. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of definite and indefinite articles. Increasing the accuracy of your complex sentences will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
