Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagrams illustrates the change that have made over past 20 years in central library and how space got renovated.

Overall, it is evident from the diagram that library got redeveloped and it looks organized compare to past. Cafe is introduced in library. There is noticeable change in the layout and technology.

One of the main change is that layout of library got completely changed and all areas are relocated at different places but entrance remained at same place. 20 years ago, children's room was located on the north-east corner which is converted into lecture room. Cafe is opened up in the south-east corner of the library. Additionally, automated machines are introduced in the library.

Furthermore, reading room is made into computer room which is situated at the south-west corner of the library. Moreover, the area which was contributed to CDs, videos and computer games, is now dedicated to the children's fiction books and storytelling events and it got sofa for the sitting arrangement. New area is allocated for the reference book. Adult fiction books are shifted from the left to right side of the library along with information desk.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the floor plan changes well. You have successfully identified the key transformations, such as the introduction of the cafe and the relocation of various sections. However, the overview could be more analytical; instead of simply stating it looks 'organized', you should highlight the most significant structural shift, such as the transition from a traditional book-focused layout to a more modern, technology-integrated space. While all parts of the task are addressed, the description of the locations is occasionally slightly imprecise, which prevents it from reaching the highest band. Overall, the report is clear and provides a good summary of the visual data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information by location or function. You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'Additionally' to connect your ideas. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. For example, the phrase 'of the library' is used at the end of almost every sentence in the final paragraph, which makes the flow feel a bit monotonous. Improving the variety of your linking phrases and using more sophisticated referencing (e.g., 'the latter', 'this area') would help to improve the cohesion of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'redeveloped', 'relocated', 'converted', and 'allocated'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For instance, 'change that have made' should be 'changes that have been made', and 'contributed to' is not the most natural way to describe the previous use of a room. Additionally, 'sofa for the sitting arrangement' is slightly awkward; 'seating area' would be more appropriate. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('The diagrams illustrates', 'library got redeveloped'), missing articles ('Cafe is introduced', 'entrance remained at same place'), and awkward passive voice constructions. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to article usage (a/the) and ensure that your verb tenses are consistent when describing past versus present states.
