Central Library 20 years ago
Student answer (Band 6.0)
There are two different illustrations given of a public library: one from 20 years ago, and the other showing how it looks now.
Overall, there are multiple differences shown in both the images. Central Library 20 years ago, wasn't much developed via means of technology whereas Library today is well organised having separate areas for different purposes.
In the past, there were tables and chairs placed in the middle of the corridor, having adult fiction and non- fiction book shelves located at right and left of the corridor. In contrast, now the corridor is empty with no tables and chairs, genre is shifted from fiction to reference books. Moreover, adult fiction books remain on the right with the addition of information desk and self-service machines.
Additionally, children's books area is now replaced with a lecture room, and gaming area is now turn into a storytelling area. While at the bottom, the enquiry desk area has been change into a cafe and besides that there is a computer room as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the floor plan changes effectively. You have successfully identified the key transformations, such as the removal of tables, the introduction of the cafe, and the repurposing of the children's area. The overview provides a clear summary of the general trend toward modernization and organization. However, to reach a higher band, ensure that all comparisons are precise. For instance, you mention the 'genre is shifted from fiction to reference books,' but the diagram shows that adult fiction remains, while reference books were added. More careful observation of the visual data would strengthen the accuracy of your reporting.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the library's layout. The use of cohesive devices such as 'In contrast,' 'Moreover,' and 'Additionally' helps guide the reader through the comparison. However, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical. For example, the transition between the description of the corridor and the adult fiction section could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas from the general layout to specific functional areas is logical and easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'illustrations,' 'well organised,' and 'repurposed' (implied). There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'wasn't much developed via means of technology' and 'genre is shifted.' These do not impede communication, but they lack the precision expected at higher bands. To improve, focus on using more academic collocations related to describing changes in diagrams, such as 'undergone significant transformation' or 'has been replaced by.'
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the enquiry desk area has been change into' (should be 'changed') and 'gaming area is now turn into' (should be 'turned'). Additionally, there are some minor punctuation and article usage issues, such as 'whereas Library today' (should be 'the library'). While these errors do not prevent understanding, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Increasing the variety of error-free complex sentences would help improve this score.
