Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the library floor plan, identifying key changes such as the removal of tables, the addition of a cafe, and the repurposing of various rooms. However, the overview is somewhat limited and lacks a clear summary of the most significant trends. While the task is addressed, the description of the changes is occasionally repetitive and lacks the precision required for a higher band. For instance, the description of the adult non-fiction area is slightly confusing. To improve, ensure that the overview highlights the most striking transformations rather than just listing changes room by room.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized into a brief introduction and a body paragraph. However, the lack of clear paragraphing makes the text feel like a dense block of information. While some cohesive devices are used, such as 'whereas' and 'furthermore', the flow is sometimes hindered by awkward sentence structures and repetitive phrasing. The progression of ideas is generally logical, but the connection between sentences could be smoother. To improve, use more varied transition signals and break the body content into logical paragraphs based on the different sections of the library (e.g., central area vs. specific rooms).
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the reader to understand the changes described. However, there is a reliance on basic or repetitive phrasing, such as 'place where... were placed' and 'are now replaced by'. There are also some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'how its look present today' and 'making the area congested'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise vocabulary related to spatial changes, such as 'transformed', 'converted', 'relocated', or 'reconfigured', and avoid repeating the same sentence structures.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and subject-verb agreement, such as 'tables and chairs used to be placed are now removed' and 'Reading room was changes to computer room'. These errors are noticeable but do not generally impede communication. To improve, focus on consistent tense usage when describing past versus present states and ensure that subjects and verbs agree. Proofreading for basic articles and prepositions would also help to reduce the frequency of these slips.
