IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows the floor plan of a public library 20 years ago and how it looks now.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 4.5)

Floor plan of a publicly available books room is usually rough and not properly manageable. In other view, central library would look like more organized.

Before 20 years, library entrance is nearby reading room where students must spend time there for reading their favorite topics. These topics could be present on newspapers or on magazines. Beside reading room, enquiry desk is located. Lots of tables and chairs are available in between study room as well as books returning place. On right-side, adult non-fiction books will be presented and adult fiction books will be placed on left-side. Moreover, at the opposite side this diagram children's books will be located on upper right side as well as videos or gamming room would present on upper left side.

Now-a-days, rearrange the library and would show huge changes in their setting. Near the entrance, cafeteria and computer room could you see. Back of videos room, shelf of all references books will be placed there, along with self-service machines are also place here. One impressive thing the organization have done in this structure is they made lecture room for learners.

So, the overall modifications they has been done with central library is amazing.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5

The response attempts to summarise the main features of the library floor plan comparing 20 years ago with the present day, satisfying the basic requirements of Task 1. However, the report suffers from numerous inaccuracies in reporting spatial relationships and details. For example, the student states that the entrance is nearby the reading room and places adult fiction and non-fiction books incorrectly. Additionally, the description of current changes mentions a cafeteria and computer room near the entrance, but key features such as the conversion of the reading room into an IT area or the repositioning of the entrance are not clearly contrasted. The overview at the end is very brief and superficial ("the overall modifications they has been done with central library is amazing"). Overall, the task is addressed only partially, as the information is not always accurately selected or clearly reported.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5

The essay is divided into four paragraphs, which attempts to mirror an introductory, body, and concluding structure. However, logical progression and overall coherence are heavily disrupted by awkward phrasing, unnatural transitions (e.g., "In other view", "Before 20 years"), and faulty cohesive devices. The second and third paragraphs list features rather than guiding the reader smoothly through a comparative spatial analysis. Referencing is frequently unclear, such as "at the opposite side this diagram children's books will be located on upper right side". Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion is weak and mechanical, making it difficult to follow the spatial comparisons between the two floor plans.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.0

The vocabulary used is basic and frequently inappropriate or unnatural for an academic report. The student uses phrases like "publicly available books room", "books returning place", and "gamming room" which reflect limited control over common lexical items. There are also noticeable word choice errors, such as "rearrange the library" instead of "rearrangements to the library" or "remodelled". While the student attempts some less common vocabulary like "modifications" and "enquiry desk", the overall lexical range is narrow and inadequate for precise description. Repetition of basic terms (e.g., "located", "placed", "room") further limits the lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The grammatical structure of the essay is heavily flawed, featuring persistent errors across simple and complex sentences. Tense usage is particularly problematic, with mixing of present, past, and future/modal forms where inappropriate (e.g., "library entrance is nearby", "adult non-fiction books will be presented", "modifications they has been done"). There are frequent awkward syntactic structures, missing articles, and preposition errors (e.g., "Before 20 years", "at the opposite side this diagram"). Complex sentence attempts are almost uniformly faulty, resulting in frequent interference with meaning. Punctuation is basic and error-prone, leaving the reader struggling to parse many of the sentences.
