Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given map contrasts the structure pattern of a public library 20 years ago and presently.

Overall, it is visible from the map that the some places that were available previously available were totally eradicated. There are changes made in the organisation. Certain rooms were replaced with new ones. Although many alterations are being made, the numbers of the total rooms remain the same.

The map shows the old layout is having the centre as a setting area which seems empty in the new structure. Similarly, the room which was used as enquiry desk is being changed into a cafe presently. Moreover, an information desk is also added in he adult fiction section in the new map.

The place of the children's book is also altered along with the addition of some sofas used for the purpose of story telling. Despite the changes in the setting and rooms, entrance remains at its old place.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the library's layout from 20 years ago compared to the present day. The writer successfully highlights key transformations, such as the removal of the central seating area, the conversion of the enquiry desk into a cafe, and the addition of the information desk and story-telling sofas in the children's section. However, there are some inaccuracies and vague statements, such as 'the numbers of the total rooms remain the same' (the room count actually varies and the layout is open-plan rather than strictly partitioned rooms), and a general lack of precise data integration or comprehensive overview comparisons. This places the response comfortably in Band 5.5 to 6.0 territory, as it addresses the task adequately with relevant main features selected, but suffers from some under-developed descriptions and slight generalisation inaccuracies.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding sentence, giving it a coherent overall arrangement. Cohesive devices and transition markers such as 'Overall', 'Although', 'Similarly', and 'Moreover' are utilised to connect ideas. However, paragraphing is somewhat weak and disjointed, with a very brief second paragraph that mixes overview elements with specific details. Referencing is occasionally slightly confusing, as seen in 'the old layout is having the centre as a setting area which seems empty in the new structure' where sentence structures become slightly awkward. Overall, logical progression is maintained adequately, earning a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms like 'layout', 'enquiry desk', 'cafe', and 'fiction section'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items such as 'eradicated', 'alterations', and 'altered'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation errors or awkward expressions, such as 'structure pattern' instead of 'floor plan' or 'layout', 'previously available were totally eradicated' (repetitive and slightly unnatural collocation), and 'setting area' instead of 'seating area'. These inaccuracies do not impede communication but prevent the score from reaching a higher band, making Band 6.0 appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses introduced by 'Although', 'which', and 'as'. Grammatical control is moderate; there are several noticeable errors throughout the text, such as 'that the some places' (extra article), 'previously available were totally eradicated' (redundancy and awkward phrasing), 'the room which was used as enquiry desk is being changed' (missing article 'an'), and 'entrance remains' (missing article 'the'). Despite these recurring minor errors, the meaning remains clear and the sentences do not cause significant difficulty for the reader. This performance aligns with the Band 6 descriptor.
