The diagram below shows the floor plan of a public library 20 years ago and how it looks now.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

The diagrams compare the layout of a central public library 20 years ago with its present-day arrangement.

Overall, the library has undergone substantial redevelopment and has become more multifunctional. Several traditional reading and book-storage areas have been replaced by facilities such as a café, a lecture room and a computer room, while self-service machines and an information desk have also been introduced. The entrance, however, has remained in the same position.

Twenty years ago, the left-hand side of the library contained a room for CDs, videos and computer games in the upper corner, adult fiction books in the middle, and a reading room for newspapers and magazines in the lower corner. In the centre were two tables with chairs. On the right, children's books occupied the upper section, while adult non-fiction books were located below them. An enquiry desk for tickets and book returns stood in the bottom-right corner.

Today, the former multimedia area has been converted into a children's fiction section with sofas and space for storytelling events. The old adult-fiction area now contains reference books, while the reading room has been replaced by a computer room. On the opposite side, the former children's section has become a lecture room, and the adult non-fiction area has been replaced by adult fiction books, an information desk and self-service machines. Finally, the previous enquiry desk has made way for a café, and the central tables and chairs have been removed.
