Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the main changes between the Central Library 20 years ago and today, noting the entrance, book sections, and the replacement of certain rooms. However, the information is somewhat disjointed and contains several inaccuracies in spatial reporting. For instance, the enquiry desk on the bottom-right was not replaced by a café (the cafe is in the bottom-right, but the enquiry desk was actually replaced/reconfigured while the café is a new addition), and some descriptions of room conversions are difficult to follow. An overview is lacking, as the writer dives straight into specific details without summarising the general transformation of the library. To reach a higher band, the response should provide a clearer overall summary and more precise reporting of the visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The organization of the text is basic. The response is divided into three short paragraphs, but the logical progression within and between them is weak. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or repetitively, such as starting consecutive clauses with 'while the room on left side' and 'while the room on the right side'. Pronoun referencing and linking words are sometimes inaccurate, leading to a choppy reading experience. Paragraphing is attempted, but grouping the spatial changes more systematically (e.g., western side vs. eastern side) would greatly improve the overall coherence and flow of the essay.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for a basic description of a floor plan, featuring terms like 'entrance', 'fiction books', 'reference books', and 'computer room'. However, the range is limited and repetitive. There are noticeable lexical and collocation errors, such as 'infront' (spelled as one word), 'opposide' (misspelling of opposite), and 'placed inbetween'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary like 'renovated', but overall, the word choice lacks precision and flexibility, fitting the criteria for Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but many complex sentences contain grammatical errors or punctuation issues. For example, the opening sentence is a comma splice ('...has the same entrance, the tables and chairs...'). There are missing prepositions, pluralisation errors (e.g., 'two sofa's' with an unnecessary apostrophe), and run-on structures. Frequent structural errors cause some difficulty for the reader, though the core meaning can generally be deciphered. To improve, the student needs to focus on sentence boundaries, accurate punctuation, and correct verb forms.
