Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student covers all parts of the task well, providing an overview of the main changes and detailing specific alterations to the library layout. The response highlights key transformations, such as the relocation of the book collection, the removal of the central tables and chairs, and the introduction of new facilities like the café and computer room. The comparison between the past and present layouts is clear, and the visual data is accurately reported. However, the development of some details could be slightly more refined to reach a higher band, as certain sections rely on listing features rather than fully synthesising the overall spatial dynamics.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is organized logically with clear paragraphing, moving from an introductory overview to descriptions of the past layout and finally the present layout. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'Twenty years ago' and 'Today', to structure the temporal contrast. However, there are some mechanical transitions and awkward phrasings, such as 'in addition, removing of reading room and , the introduction of café', which disrupt the smooth progression of ideas. Referencing is generally clear, but paragraph division could be smoother to enhance readability.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary appropriate for describing a map, utilizing terms like 'redevelopment', 'amenities', 'relocated', and 'converted'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'removing of reading room' instead of 'removal of the reading room', and minor lexical slips like 'Second map' (capitalization and article usage). Less common lexical items are attempted with some awareness of style, but occasional errors prevent the vocabulary score from reaching a higher tier.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with several error-free sentences. Examples of complex structures include 'The maps illustrate changes that have taken place in the central library over a 20-year period.' However, grammatical errors occur with prepositions and articles, such as 'table and chair' instead of 'tables and chairs', 'at the bottom corner' instead of 'in the bottom corners', and 'adult non-fiction books on the opposite side' lacking a verb. Punctuation issues also appear, such as the stray comma in 'and , the introduction'. These errors do not impede communication but prevent a higher score.
