Central Library 20 years ago
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram illustrates the map of central library 20 years ago and todays developments. if we take a look on library 20 years ago there was table and chairs at the front of the entrance and as we look right after entering from main door there was a enquiry desk for the tickets and books returns of the library. then if we move along there was a children books room but in todays library children room is replaced by the lecture room and ticket counter place is replaced by the cafe and between them there was infoirmation desk for self service machines and adult fiction books. However as we look left after enteringf form a main door there is reading room 20 years ago and along with in the north there is cd,s vedio games and computer games room which is replace today and now on the place of the reading room the computer room was placed and the place of computer room 20 years ago was given to the room for story telling. Thats the whole change in the map of of library compares to 20 years ago map.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The candidate attempts to summarise the main changes shown in the floor plans of the central library over a 20-year period. While some key transformations are mentioned—such as the replacement of the enquiry desk with a café and the children's room being moved—the response suffers from severe structural and clarity issues. Crucially, the text lacks a clear overview and is written entirely as a single, rambling paragraph of run-on sentences. Furthermore, spatial relationships are often confused or inaccurately described (e.g., mislocating specific rooms or describing changes confusingly). Important features like the addition of self-service machines are only briefly and vaguely touched upon. This level of coverage and lack of an overview aligns with Band 5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
Cohesion and logical progression are major weaknesses in this response. The entire text consists of a single block of text without any paragraph breaks, violating basic task conventions. Cohesive devices are repetitive, informal, and conversational (e.g., 'if we take a look on', 'and as we look right', 'then if we move along'), which detracts from the academic register required. Reference words like 'them' and 'there' are frequently ambiguous, making it difficult for the reader to follow the spatial transitions across the two maps. Overall, the organisation fails to provide a clear, coherent progression of information, supporting a Band 4.5 or 5.0 score.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, relying heavily on simple everyday words and phrases (e.g., 'map', 'room', 'place', 'change'). There are numerous lexical errors and unnatural collocations, such as 'ticket counter place' instead of 'enquiry desk' or 'ticket counter', and 'infoirmation desk for self service machines'. Spelling mistakes are also present, most notably 'infoirmation', 'vedio', and 'todays'. The lexical range is barely adequate to communicate the basic features of the diagram, restricting the score to Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures. The text is dominated by long, rambling compound sentences joined excessively by coordinating conjunctions like 'and' and 'so', punctuated by run-on clauses and missing punctuation. There is a complete lack of complex structures used accurately. Grammatical errors are frequent, including missing articles (e.g., 'at front of entrance'), incorrect prepositions (e.g., 'on library 20 years ago', 'in the north'), tense inconsistencies, and subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'there was table and chairs', 'computer room was placed'). These frequent errors and the lack of complex sentence control place this at Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0.
