Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student has attempted to cover the main features of the library maps from 20 years ago and today. However, there are notable inaccuracies and omissions in reporting the changes. For instance, the student states that the enquiry desk was replaced by a lecture room, whereas the map shows the enquiry desk was actually replaced by a café, and the lecture room replaced the children's room in the top-right corner. Furthermore, the overview ('OVERALL, THERE ARE NUMEROUS CHANGES HAVE BEEN TAKE PLACE...') is grammatically flawed and somewhat vague. While the response identifies several spatial changes, the factual errors in mapping the locations prevent it from scoring higher. Band score aligns with partial coverage and some inaccurate detail.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay is divided into four short paragraphs, representing an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs for past and present features. However, the logical progression is hindered by repetitive phrasing and awkward transitions such as 'TO START WITH' and 'MOVING FURTHER'. Cohesive devices are mechanically applied, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as pronoun or spatial references that do not connect smoothly. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion within sentences is weak, particularly due to punctuation and capitalization issues. This places the response firmly in the mid-range for cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is quite basic and repetitive ('CHANGES', 'LOCATED', 'ROOM'). The student attempts some less common vocabulary ('REDEVELOPMENT', 'SITUATED'), but these are offset by frequent word choice and lexical inaccuracies, such as 'CHILDREN`S, ENQUIRY DESK HAVE BEEN REPLACED' (missing nouns) and 'ON THE SOUTH DIRECTION' (incorrect preposition collocation). Furthermore, the entire text is written in capital letters, which negatively impacts the presentation of lexical control. Spelling is generally accurate, but the range is limited to simple task-specific terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('THERE ARE NUMEROUS CHANGES HAVE BEEN TAKE PLACE', 'CHILDREN`S BOOKS ROOM WERE LOCATED') and preposition errors ('ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ENTRANCE', 'IN THE BOTH CORNERS'). Punctuation is also problematic, marked by the complete absence of lowercase letters and missing commas where needed. These errors frequently distract the reader, though they do not entirely obscure the intended meaning.
