Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining both the past and present layouts of the Central Library and making relevant comparisons. An overview is successfully presented in the second paragraph, highlighting the main changes such as the introduction of the computer room, lecture room, and café. However, some aspects of the task are developed more fully than others; for instance, the body paragraphs tend to list features rather than fully synthesising or deeply comparing the spatial reallocation. While key transformations are noted, the support and extension of ideas remain somewhat mechanical and general, which places this aspect of the work firmly at the targeted level where relevant information is provided but lacks deeper analytical extension.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction to the overview, followed by separate descriptions of the past and present layouts. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct thematic points. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Initially' and 'In contrast', though referencing and transitions can occasionally feel slightly formulaic or mechanical. The half-band strength is shown through a generally clear logical flow and well-structured paragraph divisions, but it falls short of the higher descriptor because the transitions and linking of ideas lack the flexibility and smooth integration required for higher levels.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
An adequate range of vocabulary is used for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to architectural changes and library facilities, such as 'segregated spaces', 'adaptation', and 'interative' (interactive). However, there are noticeable lexical errors, including typos and word-choice slips like 'alternations' instead of alterations, 'stonger' instead of stronger, and a possessive error with 'it's layout' instead of its layout. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect the limitations expected at this level where vocabulary control lacks precision and consistency when attempting more sophisticated terminology.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases effectively (e.g., 'Initially, 20 years ago, the library comprised...'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, such as a comma splice in 'displays notable alternations, The ares for...' and minor spelling issues affecting word forms. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the descriptions easily. The control over basic sentence structures is sound, though complex patterns occasionally contain minor mechanical flaws.
