Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the Central Library 20 years ago and comparing them with the current layout. An adequate overview is presented in the second paragraph, highlighting key structural and functional shifts such as the introduction of a computer room, lecture room, self-service machines, and a café. However, some areas are slightly under-developed or repetitive, as the student revisits similar points in the main body paragraphs without fully extending the comparative analysis. The information selected is generally accurate and grounded in the visual data, fulfilling the core requirements of this band level while showing glimpses of a higher standard through clear overall comprehension.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from an introductory overview to descriptions of the past and present layouts. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different sections of the task. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or slightly repetitive, with transitional phrases like "To begin with" and "On the other hand" used rather formulaically. Referencing is generally clear, though minor lapses in cohesion prevent the response from achieving a higher band. The progression of ideas flows reasonably well, guiding the reader through the spatial transformations of the library without major disruptions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic spatial changes and library features such as "floor plan," "lecture room," and "self-service machines." However, there are notable spelling errors and typos throughout the response, such as "liberary," "medica," "liberay," and "motables," alongside occasional word choice inaccuracies like "has include" and "inludes." The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, and attempts at less common lexical items are undermined by these persistent errors. While communication is not heavily impeded, these slips restrict the score to the current level, as greater precision and error-free spelling are required for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases. Grammatical control is mixed, featuring both correct constructions and noticeable errors in subject-verb agreement and verb forms, such as "The two maps illustrates," "the area... have been converted," and "current layout of liberary has include." Punctuation is generally acceptable, but structural inaccuracies recur. These errors rarely impede communication and represent a typical mix of error-free and flawed sentences characteristic of this level, with enough complexity attempted to showcase partial control of higher-level structures.
