Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two diagrams illustrate the floor plan of a public library before two decades ago and how it changed today.

Overall, considerable changes have been made. The most noticeable are the introduction of cafe, a modified room for children where previously it was CDs and games room. The children's books room is now lecture room and tables and chairs in the center have been removed.

20 years ago, There was children's book room in top right corner, and in the top left corner the room was for CDs and games. Moreover, just from the entrance to the right hand was enquiry desk space and to the left was a reading room. While, just when one enters the library, there were tables and chairs in the middle of the library.

This day, the children books room is now modified into lecture room, where as CDs and video games room is renovated into hall and is place for storytelling events with sofas and children's fiction books located to the left as one enters the hall. Reading room is now a computer room and a new cafe have been introduced to the right of main entrance door, previously it was enquiry desk. Additionally, adult fiction books are reduced to just right side between lecture room and cafe. Same spot is now for self-service machines.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the library in the past and present, and makes relevant comparisons. You successfully identify major changes, such as the removal of the central tables and chairs, the conversion of rooms, and the introduction of a café. However, some areas are under-developed or lack precise detail. For instance, the description of the new layout for adult fiction books and self-service machines is slightly unclear, and certain minor features are omitted or generalized. To reach a higher band, you need to ensure all key transformations are fully extended with clearer spatial relationships and comprehensive coverage of the visual data provided.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response presents an overall coherent arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the information chronologically, moving from an overview to past features and then present changes. Paragraphing is utilized to separate different aspects of the task, and basic cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Overall', '20 years ago', and 'This day'. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, and referencing is not always clear, as seen in awkward transitions like 'While, just when one enters the library...' and 'where as CDs and video games room'. To achieve a higher level of coherence and progression, cohesive devices need to be used more flexibly and accurately, ensuring smooth transitions between sentences and paragraphs without disrupting the logical flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey the basic changes in the library floor plan. You attempt some less common vocabulary related to map descriptions, such as 'introduction', 'renovated', and 'modified'. However, there are notable word choice, collocation, and form errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'before two decades ago', 'This day' instead of 'Today', and 'is place for' instead of 'serves as a place for'. Additionally, some phrasing lacks precision when describing spatial positions. To improve your lexical score, focus on using more sophisticated lexical items with greater precision and ensure that word forms and collocations align with standard academic usage.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like relative clauses and time-clause introductions (e.g., 'where as CDs and video games room is renovated into hall...'). However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('the introduction of cafe', 'into lecture room'), incorrect prepositions ('to the right hand'), and faulty tense usage or agreement ('how it changed today', 'where previously it was CDs and games room'). These errors require some effort from the reader to interpret fully. To reach a higher band, you must increase the proportion of error-free sentences by paying closer attention to article use, subject-verb agreement, and accurate prepositions within spatial descriptions.
