Central Library 20 years ago
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagrams illustrate how a library looked 20 years in the past as compared to how it looks now.
Overall, it is quite clear that the entire floorplan of the library has changed quite alot in the 20 years. One of the most notiable changes is the removal of the round tables and chairs in the center of the library and the addition of a new cafe and lecture room.
The enquiry desk that was on the right side of the entrance has now been replaced with the newly added cafe meanwhile, a new information desk and a few self servicing machines have been added to the east of the librarys center. A new lecture room has also been added to the north-east side of the library where the old childrens books used to be.
The computer room has been moved to the left of the entrance whereas, the old computer room has been renovated into a place for storytelling events along with the addition of childrens book and sofas for proper seating.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview of the main changes and selecting key features to compare between the library's past layout and current state. You correctly identify the removal of the central tables, the addition of the cafe and lecture room, and the reconfiguration of the computer and reading rooms. However, the development of some ideas is slightly uneven; for instance, the mention of 'self servicing machines' lacks a precise location relative to the whole floor plan, and certain minor details are slightly misread, such as the computer room location. To reach the next level, you should ensure all major transformations are fully developed with precise spatial references and a more comprehensive overview of all zonal shifts.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from an introductory summary to specific body paragraphs detailing spatial changes. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different areas of the library. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or slightly faulty, relying on basic connectors like 'meanwhile' and 'whereas' to link clauses. Referencing could also be tighter, as pronouns and cohesive ties occasionally lack absolute clarity in guiding the reader smoothly across the two floor plans. Improving the variety and precision of transitional devices would enhance the overall flow and elevate this aspect of writing.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
An adequate range of vocabulary is used to accomplish the task, successfully attempting less common and specific descriptive terms such as 'reconfigured', 'renovated', and spatial prepositions. However, there are a few lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors, such as 'alot' instead of 'a lot', 'notiable' instead of 'noticeable', and 'self servicing' instead of 'self-service'. While these errors do not impede communication, they reflect a Band six level where word choice and spelling slips prevent the vocabulary from achieving greater precision and natural control. Expanding your range of academic collocations and checking spelling carefully will help you progress further.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You display a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and comparative structures effectively to describe the floor plans. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing apostrophes in possessives like 'librarys' and occasional awkward phrasing in complex structures. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, aligning well with the expectations for this band. To achieve a higher band, you need to produce a greater frequency of error-free complex sentences and maintain tighter control over punctuation and grammatical agreements throughout the entire response.
