Central Library 20 years ago
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps illustrate the changes to the floor plan of central library 20 years ago and now.
Overall, it is clear that many changes can be seen over the time period, with a lot of new facilities being added and the entrance remaining in the same place.
To begin with, tweenty years ago, in fornt of the entrance there was a sitting area where tables and chairs were available. Moreover,on the right side of the entrance there was an enquiry desk for ticket and book returns, while on the opposite side, there was a reading room for newspapaper. In addition, on both sides of the tables and chairs, adult fiction and non ficition books were displayed. At the far end of the library childern books were locted on one side while CDs, vidoes were displayed other side.
Currently, there were several new facilities have been introduced and removed. Firstly the tables and chairs area were removed. Furthermore, the former enquiry desk has been replaced by a cafe
while the old newspaper section now houses an information desk alongside self-service machines. Furthermore, the previous adult fiction section now displays reference books, while adult fiction has moved to the opposite side, replacing non-fiction. The area that used to store non-fiction books has been converted into a computer room. Finally, in the far corners, the old CD and video area has been expanded into a children’s room featuring fiction books and storytelling events, whereas the former children's book area has been repurposed into a lecture room.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a clear overview and highlighting the main features of the library in both time periods. The comparison between the past layout and the current floor plan is well-executed. You correctly identified key transformations, such as the conversion of the reading room into an information desk and self-service machines, and the shifting of books and rooms. While the overview is somewhat general, stating that 'many changes can be seen,' the specific details provided in the body paragraphs adequately cover the spatial shifts and transformations shown in the visual data. To reach a higher band, the overview could highlight more specific overarching trends rather than relying solely on general statements of change.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression from past to present. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the past layout, and current changes. However, cohesion relies on somewhat mechanical transitions (such as 'To begin with,' 'Currently,' and 'Furthermore'), which can feel repetitive and occasionally clumsy. Reference words are generally clear, but the links between sentences could flow more naturally without overusing formulaic sequential markers. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, you should integrate cohesive devices more flexibly and use subtler referencing techniques to connect ideas across sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic spatial changes and facility transformations. You attempted some less common vocabulary, such as 'repurposed' and 'converted,' which demonstrates an effort to vary your language. However, there are notable spelling errors ('tweenty,' 'fornt,' 'n newspapaper,' 'childern,' 'locted,' 'vidoes') and minor word-choice inaccuracies that detract from the overall quality. Additionally, some phrases are slightly unnatural or repetitive. To improve your lexical score, you need to broaden your range of precise synonyms for describing structural changes and pay closer attention to spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully structuring comparisons and descriptions of spatial changes. However, there are noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. For instance, there are tense inconsistencies, such as 'Currently, there were several new facilities have been introduced,' and punctuation issues, including missing spaces after commas and periods. Articles and pluralisation are also occasionally mishandled, such as 'tables and chairs area were removed' instead of 'was removed.' To move up to a higher band, you must increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and ensure greater accuracy in verb tense consistency and punctuation.
