Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the public library 20 years ago and comparing them with the present layout. The overall summary captures the principal changes clearly, and key spatial transformations are noted, such as the addition of the cafe, lecture room, and computer room, alongside the removal of the central tables and chairs. The response presents a clear overall progression throughout the descriptions, though some details regarding the exact positioning could be more thoroughly extended and supported. The selection of information is generally accurate and covers both past and present states effectively, securing a solid score for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical organization from the past to the present state. Paragraphing is utilized, dividing the introduction, overview, and specific spatial comparisons into structured sections. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the map changes, such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'while'. However, cohesion is at times slightly mechanical or repetitive in its transitional phrases, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as ambiguous pronoun or location links. This demonstrates the characteristics of the lower band fully while exhibiting some elements of the next, resulting in a balanced assessment for this category.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate to accomplish the task, demonstrating sufficient range to discuss spatial changes and library facilities. There are noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'information dest' instead of 'information desk', 'availabled', 'shelf' instead of 'shelves', and missing hyphens or incorrect word forms. While the student attempts less common vocabulary associated with map descriptions, such as 'renovation', 'transformed', and 'shifted', these attempts are accompanied by persistent word choice and spelling errors that occasionally draw attention, though they do not seriously impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms to describe the layouts. There are several grammatical errors, including missing articles ('entrance remained unchanged', 'area converted into a cafe'), preposition errors ('side of the entrance'), and awkward clause structures ('there were an enquiry desk'). Although complex structures are attempted, they often contain mechanical errors in verb agreement and tense consistency. However, these errors rarely impede overall communication, and punctuation is generally manageable, placing the grammatical control firmly within this band.
