Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The maps below compare the floor plan of public library in past (20 years back) and how it appears today.

Overall, it is clear that the floor plan of the central library completely changed with the addition of cafe and computer room. Along with that, information desk and self service machines are placed in the east of map just below lecture room. Moreover, center tables and chairs were present in the past map which is now removed in latest plan.

Begining with the west side of the map where CDs, videos, computer games were present in past now it is replaced with children's fiction books and story telling events corner and corner sofa are also placed in the north west side of library. Furthermore, adult fiction books and reading room (newspapers and magazines is now removed and all reference books and just below to reference books computer room is constructed.

Entrance is remained the same in both maps but center tables and chairs is now removed in latest changes in new map. Moreover, children books corner in the north east side is now converted in to lecture room. After that just below lecture room adult fiction book is placed along with that self-service machines and information desk is added. Enquiry desk where customers can return books and book tickets in the southern eastern corner is now converted in to cafe.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons between the two floor plans of the central library. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting key global changes such as the addition of the cafe and computer room, alongside the removal of the central tables and chairs. However, some areas are slightly under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies in spatial referencing, such as describing the enquiry desk as being converted into a cafe when the maps show the cafe occupies the bottom-right space where the enquiry desk was located. The response fully satisfies the requirements for the lower band while demonstrating parts of the higher band through its clear selection of salient features, stopping just short of a fully extended and precise account due to these minor descriptive inaccuracies.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from an introductory overview to detailed descriptions of the west and east sides of the library. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the spatial body paragraphs. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, relying heavily on repetitive transition markers like 'Moreover' and 'After that' rather than a smoother variety of cohesive devices. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as ambiguous pronoun use or dangling modifiers like 'where CDs, videos, computer games were present in past now it is replaced'. These organisational limitations keep the response firmly at this level, as logical flow is disrupted by clunky transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the changes shown in the visual data with terms like 'floor plan', 'fiction books', 'reference books', and 'self-service machines'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items, such as 'constructed', 'converted', and 'addition', but these are sometimes accompanied by lexical and collocational inaccuracies, for instance, 'story telling events corner' or 'center tables'. Spelling and word-choice errors are present, but they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the narrative of changes easily. To reach a higher band, the student would need to demonstrate a wider, more flexible range of precise lexical items with fewer errors in word formation and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complex structures are frequently affected by grammatical errors. There are noticeable issues with prepositions, articles, and verb tenses, such as 'public library in past (20 years back)', 'Entrance is remained the same', and missing plural markers or determiners like 'in east of map'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with run-on sentences and comma splices. While these errors do not completely obscure the meaning, they are frequent enough to cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher band. A greater variety of error-free complex sentences and stricter control over basic grammatical boundaries are needed.
