Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response attempts to address the prompt by comparing the library floor plan from 20 years ago to its current layout, but the coverage is partial and lacks clarity. While the writer mentions a few features such as the entrance, reading room, and reference books, key spatial relationships and major changes are poorly communicated. The overview provided in the second paragraph is underdeveloped and confused, rather than offering a clear summary of the main trends. Additionally, personal commentary ("From my own perspective...") is inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 response, which requires an objective report. To improve, the writer must ensure all major features of both diagrams are accurately reported and clearly contrasted without injecting personal opinions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The organisation of the text is basic and lacks clear overall progression. Although the writer attempts to use paragraph breaks, the paragraphs themselves do not logically group information. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, with awkward transitions like "To start with" and "However" applied inappropriately to map comparison points. Pronoun referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow which part of the floor plan is being described. To move to a higher band, the response needs a more logical sequence of information, clearer paragraph structures focusing on specific areas of the library, and appropriate cohesive links to connect the past and present layouts smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, featuring basic terms such as "floor plan", "library", "room", and "books". There are frequent word-choice and spelling errors that impede communication, including typos like "pulic", "recencently", "libary", "chidren", "newpapapers", and "aplace". The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but these are often used inaccurately or unidiomatically. To achieve a higher score, the student needs to expand their range of vocabulary related to spatial descriptions and architectural changes, utilize synonyms rather than repeating the same words, and pay closer attention to spelling and accurate word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical range is quite limited, relying heavily on simple or poorly constructed complex sentences. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, such as missing articles ("in 20 years ago, the floor plan of apublic libary has"), tense inconsistencies, and run-on sentences with incorrect comma splices. Prepositions are also misused in several places. These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer should focus on mastering basic sentence structures, ensuring correct subject-verb agreement, applying appropriate tenses for past and present comparisons, and refining punctuation around clauses and introductory phrases.
