Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You successfully addressed all parts of the task by providing a clear overview and reporting the main features and changes shown in the floor plans. Your overview effectively captured the major transformation, noting the addition of the storytelling area and the cafe. You selected and highlighted key spatial changes, such as the conversion of the reading room into a computer room and the relocation of adult fiction books. However, your response has a tendency to over-generalise or omit certain specific details, such as the exact placement of the new self-service machines in the adult fiction section. To reach a higher level, you could provide a slightly more comprehensive comparison of the layout changes while maintaining conciseness.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
Your response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introductory paragraph and an overview. However, your progression is sometimes hindered by awkward and mechanical transitional phrases, such as 'Scrutinising deeper into the obtainable information' and 'Concatenating further'. These phrases sound unnatural and detract from the natural flow of information. While paragraphing is used adequately to separate different areas of the library, the referencing and linking between sentences can be clunky. To achieve a higher score, you should use more natural and flexible cohesive devices, avoiding forced academic-sounding transitions that do not fit the context of describing a physical map.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'massive transformation', 'prominent changes', and 'relocated'. However, there are noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies that prevent a higher score, including awkward word choices like 'obtainable information' instead of 'available information', and typos such as the missing closing quotation mark or backtick in 'children`s books' and 'cafe`'. While these errors do not impede communication, they show a lack of precision. To improve, focus on mastering collocation and word choice specific to describing spatial changes, and ensure accurate spelling and punctuation of possessives and accents.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You used a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully incorporating passive structures such as 'have been removed', 'is now converted', and 'is built there'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('the introduction of a area' instead of 'an area', 'converted into computer room' instead of 'a computer room', and 'reamained' with a spelling/typing error). Despite these errors, your sentences are generally understandable and communication is rarely impeded. To move up to a higher band, you need to demonstrate greater control over article usage and ensure that your complex structures remain entirely free of minor grammatical lapses.
