Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagrams illustrates two different floor plans of a public library one shows 20 years ago how it looks and second one shows how it looks today.

If we see at the old central library plan the table and chairs set in the centre of the library and both adult fiction and non-fiction books sat on left and right if we move on through the entrance and stop in the middle of the library. on next if we enter inside on our first right we see the enquiry desk and on the left we see reading room and at the far end wee see childrens books on our right and computer games on our left.

In today time we see that cafe was replaced by the enquiry desk and we see computer room on our left and in the centre there are no tables or chairs and books section were also replaced with each other with self services machines on the right and on the far end we see lecture room on our right and on left we see a merged room of childrens fiction books and storytelling events.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the task only partially, presenting an attempt to describe the two floor plans of the public library. While some main features are mentioned, such as the position of the entrance, the enquiry desk, and the children's books, the overall coverage is limited and lacks a clear, structured overview. Several details are inaccurate or confusingly reported, such as claiming the café was replaced by the enquiry desk when the old plan featured no café, or describing the layout of the rooms in a fragmented, difficult-to-follow sequence. The information is under-developed and lacks the necessary synthesis and comparison required for a fully realized summary of the changes over the 20-year period.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organization with the division into paragraphs, but the response lacks clear overall progression. The movement through the floor plans relies on repetitive, run-on spatial descriptions, such as 'if we see at the old central library plan' and 'on next if we enter inside on our first right', which makes the sequence hard to follow. Cohesive devices are minimal, inadequate, and often repetitive, resulting in a choppy and disjointed reading experience. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal logical progression is frequently disrupted by overly long, unstructured sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, with basic library-related terms such as 'library', 'table', 'chairs', 'books', and 'entrance'. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'In today time' instead of 'Nowadays' or 'Today', and 'self services machines' instead of 'self-service machines'. These errors, alongside issues with word form and collocation, reveal a constrained lexical range that struggles to capture the precise spatial changes shown in the diagrams, occasionally causing difficulty for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple or poorly linked clauses. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, marred by missing punctuation, run-on structures, and incorrect prepositions. There are frequent errors in verb forms, tense consistency (such as mixing past and present descriptions inappropriately), and subject-verb agreement, as seen in 'The diagrams illustrates' and 'the table and chairs set'. These frequent grammatical errors disrupt the flow and can occasionally cause confusion for the reader.
