Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by outlining the main changes between the library's layout twenty years ago and today, such as the replacement of the reading room with a computer room and the addition of a café. An overall trend is provided at the beginning, noting the modernization of public facilities. However, some details are slightly inaccurate or confusingly reported, such as stating that CDs, videos, and computer games areas were in the northeast part when they were actually in the top-left, and claiming that adult fiction books were turned down when the area was actually modified. Ideas are generally relevant, but certain areas of the plan are under-developed or inaccurately localized, which prevents the score from reaching a higher level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into introductory, overview, and body paragraphs. Logical sequencing is attempted using transitional markers like 'Similarly', 'In addition to this', and 'Significantly', which helps guide the reader through the spatial comparisons. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or imprecise, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun use in 'which is replaced by'. Paragraphing is used, but the internal progression within body paragraphs occasionally lacks smoothness, keeping the performance at this band level.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe common architectural and layout changes. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary items such as 'urbanized', 'eminities', and 'installed', but these are accompanied by noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, spelling ('eminities' instead of 'amenities', 'refrence' instead of 'reference'), and collocation. While communication is not severely impeded, these lexical errors and a somewhat limited range of precise spatial terminology prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like comparative clauses and passive voice constructions (e.g., 'is constructed', 'was completely removed'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies ('at presently compared it before 20 years'), subject-verb agreement errors ('there were CDs, videos and computer games areas are situated'), and article omissions or misuses. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a limited control over complex grammatical structures.
