Central Library 20 years ago
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the floor plan of a public library 20 years ago and how it looks now.
Overall, it is clear that the library has been mordernised. New facilities have been added and several other facilities have been replaced by the new ones. The main changes are introuction of lecture room, a cafe, a computer while the tables and chairs have been removed. The entrance has remained in the same position.
To begin with, the upper left section contained CDs, videos and computer games, while the upper right area was used for children’s books. Adult fiction and non-fiction books were located on either side of the central tables and chairs. In the bottom left corner, there was a reading room for newspapers and magazines, whereas an enquiry desk occupied the bottom right section.
Turning to the remaining data, the upper left corner now consist chidlren's fiction books with sofas and story telling events. The upper right area is a lecture room. Table and chairs have been removed. The bottom left and right section is now a computer room and a cafe respectively. Below the children's fiction book area is a all reference books and below a lecture room has a information desk now.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You give a relevant overview, noting modernisation, new facilities, the removal of the central tables and chairs, and the unchanged entrance. The description also accurately identifies several key locations in both plans, including the former reading room and enquiry desk and the new lecture room, computer room and café. However, some important changes are not fully reported: for example, the former adult non-fiction area becomes an information desk area with self-service machines, while adult fiction moves to the middle-right. The final sentence, “below a lecture room has a information desk now,” is unclear and misrepresents the layout: the information desk is in the open middle-right area, not below the lecture room. Covering these changes more precisely would make the account more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by descriptions of the earlier and current layouts. Phrases such as “To begin with” and “Turning to the remaining data” help signal the shift between plans, and the location-based descriptions are generally easy to follow. However, the final paragraph becomes less coherent because it combines several locations without clearly explaining their relationships. In particular, “Below the children's fiction book area is a all reference books” and “below a lecture room has a information desk now” make the layout difficult to visualise. Use consistent location language and group each area with its corresponding change; clearer referencing would strengthen the progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing a library plan, including “floor plan,” “section,” “replaced,” and “occupied,” and the reader can understand most of the intended comparisons. Some word choices and spelling errors, however, reduce precision: “mordernised,” “introuction,” and “chidlren's” are misspelled, while “a computer” is too vague for the computer room shown. “Story telling events” is understandable but is better expressed as “storytelling events.” The phrase “remaining data” is also less natural for a floor plan. More accurate spelling and specific terms for facilities and locations would make the description clearer and more controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “while the upper right area was used for children’s books” and the clause beginning “whereas.” Most of the layout remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. For example, “the upper left corner now consist” needs subject–verb agreement and a present-tense form (“consists”), while “the bottom left and right section is” has number-agreement problems. The final sentence also has faulty article use and sentence structure: “below a lecture room has a information desk now.” Practise agreement, articles, and constructing clear sentences that describe positions; this would improve accuracy while retaining your range of structures.
