Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Both maps display the major changes happened over 20 yeras in the floor plan of a public library.

To begin with, the room for CD's, videos and computer games in the north west was replaced with a room for story telling events provided with children's fiction books with modified infrastructure. The most notable additions in the map was the removal of tables and chairs from the center. Moreover, children's books room was converted to lecture room. Adult fiction books were relocated from east to west side with both information desk and self service machines were added near to adult fiction books by removing adult non-fiction books. It was seen that both reading room and enquiry desk in the left and right of the entrance was demolished. Instead of that a new computer room and cafe was constructed respectively.

To sum up, there was a considerable development took place in the central libraray over the years by improving collection of various new additions of book which drew the attention of readers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify several major changes, including the removal of the central tables and chairs, the conversion of the children’s room into a lecture room, and the addition of a computer room and café. These are relevant comparisons and show that you have understood much of the plan. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the adult fiction section moved from the west to the east, not from east to west, and the reading room and enquiry desk were on the left and right of the entrance respectively, rather than the reverse. The concluding claim about improving the book collection is also too general and does not capture the broader reorganisation. A clearer overview of the main changes, followed by precise descriptions of the locations, would make the report more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph describing changes, and a concluding summary. Sequencing expressions such as “To begin with” and “Moreover” help signal progression, and the changes are generally grouped into a single account. However, the main paragraph packs many transformations into long sentences, making some relationships and locations difficult to follow. For example, the sentence beginning “Adult fiction books were relocated” combines the relocation, new facilities, and removal of another section. The final “To sum up” repeats a broad conclusion rather than synthesising the key changes. Organise the details into clearer groups—such as the left and right sides or the former and current layout—and use more precise referencing to improve flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing a changed floor plan, including “replaced,” “converted,” “relocated,” “removal,” and “additions.” These choices communicate the general nature of the changes, and the meaning is usually clear. Some word choices and collocations are less natural or precise, however: “modified infrastructure” is vague for describing the room’s furnishings, while “a considerable development took place” is awkward. “Improving collection of various new additions of book” is also unclear and does not accurately summarise the range of changes. There are spelling and form slips, including “yeras,” “libraray,” and “story telling.” Aim for precise terms such as “reorganised,” “converted into,” and “facilities,” and check spelling and natural word combinations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses linked with “which” and “by,” and most of the intended meaning can be understood. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “the major changes happened over 20 years” would be more accurately expressed as “the major changes that occurred over 20 years,” and “the most notable additions … was” has a subject–verb agreement error. The phrase “there was a considerable development took place” combines two incompatible structures; use either “considerable development took place” or “there was considerable development.” Review articles and plural forms as well, and break up the longest sentence to maintain control while still using complex structures.
