Central Library 20 years ago
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The layout of floor plan compares the change of a public library between 20 years ago and the present.
Overall, the layout has changed quite a lot with removal of tables and chairs from the center of the room and addition of separate room for lecture and computer. Moreover, there has been addition of cafe, sofas and self-service machines.
Looking at central library 20 years ago, the entrance was situated at the south of the room and the layout consist of tables and chairs at the center. The children's books was located at the top right corner and CDs, videos, computer games was situated at the top left corner. Additionally, Adult fiction books was at the west and adult non-fiction books was at the East. The lower part of the floor plan consist of reading room at the left and enquiry desk at the right.
Turning to the present layout of central library, the entrance is at the same position and the table chairs has been removed and area is now a open place. The top part of layout include lecture room at the right side and storytelling events with two sofas and children's fiction books at the left side. Likewise, at the bottom part of the floor plan has separate room for computer at the left side and cafe at the right side. All the reference books can be found at the middle left and information desk with self-service machines and adult fiction books at the right side of the floor plan.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You give a clear overview of the main changes, especially the removal of the central tables and chairs and the addition of a lecture room, computer room, café and self-service machines. The comparison is grounded in the plan, and you cover the main areas in both versions, including the book sections and the entrance. This makes the response a well-focused summary rather than a list of isolated details. To strengthen it further, make a few changes more explicit: for example, the former children’s books area became children’s fiction and storytelling space, while the former adult non-fiction section is now the information desk and self-service area. You could also clarify that the reading room and enquiry desk were replaced by the computer room and café.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear progression: an introduction, an overview, a description of the earlier plan and then the current layout. This organisation makes the comparison easy to follow, and phrases such as “Overall,” “Looking at” and “Turning to” signal the stages effectively. The details are generally grouped by location, which suits a floor-plan task. Some linking is a little formulaic, however, and repeated use of “at the … side” and “floor plan” makes parts of the description sound list-like. A more direct comparison between corresponding areas would improve flow—for instance, linking the old reading room with the new computer room in one sentence. Use cohesive devices selectively and vary references to the library’s sections.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing locations and changes, including “situated,” “addition,” “separate room” and “removed.” These choices communicate the main features clearly, and the reader can identify where the facilities are. However, some wording is imprecise or repetitive: “the layout of floor plan compares the change” is awkward, and “area is now a open place” does not describe the central space naturally. “Table chairs” is also an unclear label for the former tables and chairs. Aim for more precise map-description collocations and vary repeated terms such as “at the … side.” The vocabulary is sufficient for the task, but greater accuracy and flexibility would make the account more polished.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and longer sentences, and the overall meaning remains clear. There are some recurring errors in articles, agreement and verb forms, however. For example, “the layout consist” should be “the layout consisted,” while “The children's books was located” needs plural agreement (“were located”). In the present description, “the table chairs has been removed” has both an unclear noun phrase and incorrect agreement; “the tables and chairs have been removed” is more accurate. Article use also needs attention in “a open place” (“an open space”) and “addition of cafe” (“the addition of a café”). Practise checking each sentence for subject–verb agreement, tense consistency and articles, while retaining your useful longer sentence patterns.
