Central Library 20 years ago
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The two maps gives information about a floor plan of a library 20 years ago compared to how it looks presently.
Overall, the central library has undergone significant development and modernization. Several new sections such as computer room, children fiction books, lecture room, a cafe and self service machines have been added.
20 years ago, there were tables and chaires in center of the library with adult fiction books being in the the left side and non-fiction book in the right. In the top left corner, there was a room for CDs, videos and computer games, adjacent to this room in the top right corner was a room dedicated for children books. Furthermore, reading room was placed just uder the adult fiction book in the bottom left corner while the enquiry desk was placed on the rght side of the entrance.
Presently, a cafe was build in place of the enquiry desk in the right side of the entance. Moreover, adult non-fiction books section was transformed in multipurpose area with facilites such as self-service machines, information desk and adult fiction books. CDs, videos and computer games rooms in the top left corner was converted in a area for storytelling events. Additionally, two sofas and children's fiction books were placed there, while opposite to this room children's books room was converted to leture room. Finally, in the left side of entrance reading room was repurposed to be a computer room, whereas just above it all refrence books were placed instead of adult fiction books.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response gives a clear overview of substantial change and reports the main conversions across the plan, including the new café, computer room, lecture room, storytelling area and self-service facilities. Most locations and before-and-after relationships are accurately described, such as the reading room becoming a computer room and the former children’s room becoming a lecture room. This breadth and relevant comparison support a strong response to the task. Some details are less precise: the café replaces the former enquiry-desk area, but the response says it was built “in place of” the desk without noting that the desk itself is no longer shown; likewise, the former CDs room is described as converted to storytelling, although the current room also contains children’s fiction books and sofas. More exact reporting of these combined uses would strengthen the account.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is organised into an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs that move from the earlier plan to the present one. This gives the reader a generally clear progression, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “Moreover,” and “Finally” help signal additions and comparisons. However, the sequence within the present-day paragraph is somewhat mechanical, with several details joined by “Moreover,” “Additionally,” and “Finally” rather than grouped by area or type of change. Some references also require effort to follow, particularly “there” and “this room” in the description of the top-left section. Grouping the changes by left and right sides, and using clearer references such as “the former media room,” would make cohesion more flexible and precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
There is an adequate range for describing a floor plan, including “transformed,” “repurposed,” “dedicated,” and “self-service machines.” These choices help convey changes rather than merely list labels. Some less common wording is used with imperfect collocation or form: “significant development and modernization” is broad, while “multipurpose area” is not quite the clearest description of the adult-fiction section’s new arrangement. Spelling errors such as “chaires,” “facilites,” “rght,” and “refrence” are noticeable, though the intended meanings are generally recoverable. Aim for accurate spelling and more exact map vocabulary, for example “section,” “area,” and “room,” and avoid describing a space as multipurpose unless the plan clearly supports that interpretation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts a useful mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “while,” “whereas,” and “although”-type contrasts. Meaning is usually clear, but errors in agreement, articles, verb forms and sentence construction prevent consistently accurate control. For example, “The two maps gives” should be “The two maps give,” and “a cafe was build” should be “a café was built.” The sentence beginning “CDs, videos and computer games rooms … was converted” has both an awkward noun structure and a subject–verb agreement problem; “the room for CDs, videos and computer games was converted” would be clearer. There are also missing or incorrect articles in phrases such as “in center of the library.” Review agreement and past-tense passive forms, then proofread each sentence for articles.
