IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows the floor plan of a public library 20 years ago and how it looks now.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the map of central library 20 years ago contrasting from present day library, tracing the changes made and innovations done.

Overall, we can notice that before also it was divided into 4 sections and today also its divided into four sections with new or some more added items, entrance is at the same position giving a full view of the library when someone enters.

In central library today the reference books are added and a cafe is also inaugurated for readers to have a comfortable environment space to discuss and have their meals. We can also notice a shift in the technology from 20 years ago to today, earlier there were CDs, videos, computer games which changed in a single device and they made a separate computer room for that, the self-service machines are also setup to avoid people waiting in line.

Remaining changes are like sofas are placed and storytelling events are organized the table and chairs earlier are removed and the center of library is kept open.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify several important changes, including the addition of a café, computer room, reference books and self-service machines, as well as the removal of the central tables and chairs. The overview also notes that the entrance remains in the same position. These points address the task, but some comparisons are incomplete or imprecise: for example, the earlier plan already had adult fiction and non-fiction sections, while today the adult fiction area remains and the reference collection is consolidated as “All reference books.” The claim that the library is divided into four sections in both plans is unclear and does not capture the main reorganisation. Some explanations, such as the machines being installed to prevent queues, are not shown by the diagram. A more precise overview and fuller account of the changed room locations would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing changes. This gives the reader a generally coherent route through the information, and phrases such as “Overall” and “Remaining changes” signal transitions. However, the progression is not consistently clear because several different changes are packed into long sentences, particularly the discussion of technology and the computer room. The phrase “before also it was divided into 4 sections” is difficult to interpret, and “Remaining changes” does not clearly connect the final points to the earlier comparison. Organise the details by location or by what was added, removed and relocated, and use clearer references to the two plans. This would make the comparisons easier to follow without changing the basic paragraph structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing the plans, including “reference books,” “self-service machines,” “shift in the technology” and “removed.” These terms help communicate the main changes. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural choices that reduce precision: “inaugurated” is not a natural way to describe a new café in a library, “innovations done” is awkward, and “comfortable environment space” is unclear. “Changed in a single device” also does not accurately describe the diagram, which shows a computer room rather than stating that the earlier items became one device. Aim for precise map-description vocabulary and natural collocations, such as “was converted into,” “was replaced by,” and “was added.” This would make the account clearer and more appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a relative clause in “entrance is at the same position giving a full view” and a complex comparison beginning “earlier there were…”. The main meaning is usually understandable, but some grammatical errors and awkward sentence construction remain. For example, “before also it was divided” has an unclear word order, and “today also its divided” needs a correctly formed verb and possessive contraction. The long sentence beginning “We can also notice a shift” joins several ideas with commas, making the relationships between clauses unclear. There are also article and agreement issues in phrases such as “a cafe is also inaugurated.” Use shorter, controlled sentences for individual changes, and check verb forms, articles and punctuation when combining clauses.
