Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given diagrams depicts the floor plan of a public library 20 years ago and how it looks right now.

Overall, the library of that time and today is completely different. There are many changes but most eye catching are absence of tables and chairs from the center of the library and structural change of rooms.

20 years ago, as soon as you enter the library you will see tables and chairs at the center. To your right is enquiry desk. Opposite to it is the reading room. As you move forward and reach at center there is adult non-fiction to right and adult fiction books to left. To upper right corner is children's books and play zone to upper left corner.

In Central library today, to the right of entrance is cafe which offer a range of beverages. To the left is computer center providing internet connection. In front of cafe is information desk and self-service books. In the upper right corner is lecture room and in left corner is children's section below that is reference books section.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main purpose and give an overview of substantial changes, especially the removal of the central tables and chairs and the reorganisation of rooms. You also compare several locations in the two plans. However, some details are inaccurate or unsupported: the earlier plan has no “play zone,” and the current café is not described as offering beverages in the visual. Important changes are also omitted, including the former CDs/videos room becoming a children’s fiction and storytelling area, and the new lecture room, café and computer room. The current plan’s adult fiction area and self-service machines are only partly reported. More precise coverage of these key changes, without adding assumptions, would make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the earlier and current layouts. This makes the comparison easy to follow, and location phrases such as “to your right” and “in the upper right corner” help orient the reader. However, the descriptions read mainly as a sequence of directions rather than a comparison of the most significant changes. Some references are unclear, particularly “Opposite to it” and “To upper right corner,” and the transition between the two plans could more explicitly connect old and new uses of the same spaces. Grouping related changes and using clearer linking phrases would improve progression and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing a floor plan, including “floor plan,” “center,” “structural change,” “enquiry desk,” and “self-service.” These terms help communicate the layout, and the reader can generally understand your meaning. Some choices are imprecise or informal for an IELTS report: “play zone” does not match the plan’s labels, “self-service books” misnames the machines, and “completely different” is a broad description. There are also awkward collocations such as “most eye catching” and “reach at center.” Use the exact labels shown and choose more precise language for changes in function and location to demonstrate greater control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the overall meaning is usually clear. However, some grammatical errors remain. The opening should be “The given diagrams depict,” because the plural subject requires a plural verb. In “the library of that time and today is completely different,” the subject and comparison are not formed clearly; “the library’s layout has changed considerably” would be more accurate. Other issues include “reach at center,” missing articles in phrases such as “to upper right corner,” and “cafe which offer,” where the relative clause needs subject–verb agreement. Check articles, prepositions and agreement, and use a wider range of accurate comparison structures.
