Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The figure illustrates the difference in the plan of a public library twenty years ago and today.

There were tables and chairs around as one entered the library twenty years ago which have been taken away now to make place more spacious. A computer room is set up on left side and the cafe is constructed on the right side as we move into building today. Due to emerging technology, self-service machines are installed near information desk which were not there twenty years ago. Moreover, library is provided with a lecture room now which is a fruitful addition to the library. A proper space is dedicated now for the children`s fiction books, where storytelling events also take place. In addition to it, there were two separate sections for adult fiction and non-fiction books which have been replaced by a single space where books of all refernces are kept. Finally, the computer games section has also been removed from library today which was there twenty years ago,

To summarize, the library building has undergone many changings in its space owing to the demand of changing needs of people and the emerging technology.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify several important changes accurately, including the removal of the central tables and chairs, the addition of a computer room, café, lecture room and self-service machines, and the conversion of the adult fiction and non-fiction areas into a reference-book section. Your concluding overview also recognises that the library has been substantially reorganised. Some details, however, are unclear or inaccurate: the former adult fiction area is not simply replaced by reference books; the current plan labels the middle-left area “All reference books” and places adult fiction on the middle-right. The claim that the computer-games section was removed overlooks its broader former label and the new children’s fiction/storytelling room in that location. The response covers the main task, but more precise comparisons and a clearer overview of the overall layout would strengthen it.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response follows a generally understandable sequence, moving from changes near the entrance to new facilities and book sections, and it ends with a summary. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “In addition to it,” and “Finally” help signal the progression. However, the information is presented as one long paragraph, so the overview and supporting comparisons are not clearly separated. Some links are mechanical, and the reference in “which were not there twenty years ago” is not fully clear because it follows “information desk.” Grouping the major changes into paragraphs—for example, an overview followed by changes to rooms and book areas—and using clearer references would make the organisation more effective.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for describing a library plan, including “self-service machines,” “lecture room,” “separate sections,” and “dedicated.” These choices communicate many of the changes clearly. However, several word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “make place more spacious,” “as we move into building,” and “many changings in its space.” “Fruitful addition” is also an awkward description of a room in a floor plan, while “books of all refernces” is both unclear and misspelled. Aim for precise map-description language such as “create more open space,” “on entering the building,” and “the layout has been extensively reorganised.” This would improve naturalness and accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “which” and “where,” and the main changes are usually understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, sentence construction and punctuation. For example, “the cafe is constructed on the right side as we move into building today” needs clearer article use and a more controlled clause structure; “library is provided with a lecture room” also lacks an article before “library.” The long sentence beginning “There were tables and chairs…” combines several changes and becomes difficult to follow. The final sentence ends with a comma rather than a full stop. Use shorter, well-controlled comparisons and check articles, clause boundaries and sentence-ending punctuation.
