Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram provides information about the changes to the central library over a period of 20 years.

Overall, only entrance remains the same and all other sections changed with the passage of time. Additionally, few new facilities are added which were not available 20 years ago.

Entrance remains in the center while the tables and chairs which were placed before in the middle of the library are removed from there. Children's book section is now replaced by lecture room and the adult fction books take place of the adult non-fiction books and the place also extended with new facilities-information desk and self-service machines-. Nowadays, library also offers the meals to the visitors as cafe is now available in the central library and it replases the enquiry desk.

As moving left side after entrance, on the bottom left there is computer room which once used as a reading room 20 years ago. On the upper side of the left corner there is space for storytelling events with extra seating facitilies as sofas installed on both edges of the room. Between these two sections the adult fiction books are now available and the CDs, videos, and computer games section now not available.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main transformation from a traditional library layout to one with newer facilities, and your overview correctly notes that the entrance stays in the same place while the central tables and chairs are removed. Several comparisons are also accurate: the former reading room becomes a computer room, and the enquiry desk is replaced by a café. However, some important changes are misreported or unclear. The children’s books area becomes a lecture room, but the former adult non-fiction area becomes adult fiction, not the other way around as your wording suggests. The current adult fiction area is also not simply an extension of the old non-fiction section. You omit the new reference-book area and do not clearly explain that the former adult fiction area becomes reference books. More precise coverage of these changes would make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing changes on the right and left sides of the plan. This gives the reader a useful route through the comparison, and phrases such as “As moving left side after entrance” signal a shift in focus. However, the progression is not always easy to follow because some locations and changes are compressed into long sentences. For example, the sentence beginning “Children’s book section is now replaced…” combines several right-side changes without clearly separating them. The overview also repeats the unchanged entrance before the body returns to it. Use clearer location-based sequencing and divide complex comparisons into shorter sentences; this would make the links between old and new areas more precise and less mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing a floor plan, including “replaced,” “available,” “facilities,” “installed,” and “section.” These choices help communicate the main changes, and terms such as “self-service machines” are appropriately specific. However, several word choices and spelling errors reduce precision: “offers the meals” is not a natural description of a café, “take place of” is an inaccurate collocation, and “fction,” “replases,” and “facitilies” are misspelled. “Extra seating facilities” is also less direct than describing the sofas. Aim for accurate collocations and consistent spelling, and use precise spatial language such as “in the former…” or “in the area previously occupied by…” to distinguish locations and changes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses with “while,” “as,” and “which,” and the main meaning is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, agreement, and sentence construction. For example, “only entrance remains the same” needs an article, while “Children’s book section is now replaced” has an awkward passive construction; “the children’s books area has been converted into…” would be clearer. In “the adult fction books take place of the adult non-fiction books,” the verb pattern is not grammatical. The final sentence beginning “As moving left side” is also not a complete, natural introductory clause. Check articles and verb patterns, and punctuate long sentences so that each comparison has a clear subject and verb.
