IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows the floor plan of a public library 20 years ago and how it looks now.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Central Library 20 years ago
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pictures illustrate the layout of central library 20 years ago and how it looks today.
Overall, central library underwent significant changes by removing tables and chairs from the center. Children's books and enquiry desk on the right side transformed by lecture room and cafe. However, on the left side reading room changed to computer room and computer area to children's fiction book.
Looking at the details, enterance and the layout remained the same. While in the past, there were tables and chairs in the centers which are now removed. On the right side, children's book area is updated by lecture room. Similarly, there was enquiry desk for tickets, book returns in the lower right corner which is now a cafe. In the center of thes two areas, adult non-fiction books updated by adult fiction books and addition of information desk and self-service machines.
On the left side, computer game area is modified by children's fiction book and by placing sofas for storytelling events. Adult fiction books and reading room transformed to all reference books and computer room.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main transformation clearly: the central tables and chairs have been removed, and several rooms have changed purpose. The overview also captures major changes on both sides, while the detail paragraphs cover most of the labelled areas, including the new lecture room, café, computer room, and self-service machines. This gives the reader a generally accurate account of the plan. Some descriptions are imprecise, however: the children’s books area became a lecture room, while the former CDs/videos/games room became the children’s fiction and storytelling room; these changes are not expressed clearly in “transformed by lecture room” and “computer game area is modified by children’s fiction book.” More precise comparisons and clearer identification of the former and current uses would strengthen the report further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing changes on the right and left. This makes the main progression easy to follow, and phrases such as “On the right side” and “On the left side” help organise the spatial information. However, some linking is mechanical or unclear. For example, “Similarly” does not show a clear similarity between the two changes it connects, and “In the center of thes two areas” leaves the location reference uncertain. The overview also combines several changes in a long sequence, making the relationships harder to track. Use more precise location references and connect each comparison directly to the relevant former and current feature.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing a floor plan, including “layout,” “transformed,” “self-service machines,” and “storytelling events.” These terms help convey the main changes, and the reader can generally understand the intended comparisons. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or vague, though. “Updated by” does not naturally describe a room changing its function, and “computer game area” is less precise than the plan’s “CDs, videos, computer games.” There are also spelling errors such as “enterance” and “thes,” alongside inconsistent forms such as “cafe” for “café.” Choose verbs such as “was converted into” or “was replaced by,” and use the plan’s labels accurately to improve precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast introduced by “While” and the comparison beginning “Similarly.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain and occasionally make relationships unclear. For example, “central library underwent” and “children’s books and enquiry desk” need articles, while “there were tables and chairs in the centers which are now removed” shifts awkwardly between past and present and uses an unclear relative clause. The sentence beginning “On the right side” also has an incomplete construction: “children’s book area is updated by lecture room.” Practise consistent past-tense descriptions and complete comparison structures, such as “The former children’s area was converted into a lecture room.”
