Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates how a public libary's floor plan looked 20 years ago and how it looks now.

Overall, the layout has drastically changed with none of the original locations maintained. A cafe and lecture room were the major changes. The adult fiction books section is the only one that was maintained despite changing the location. Tables and chairs section was completley removed.

On the left side of the entrance lies a computer room which was previously the reading room. It is followed by all reference books section which used to be the adult fiction books location. The room with the sofas was where the computer games were played 20 years ago.

On the right side of the entrance is where the cafe is today and the enquiry desk previously was. The adult non fiction place 20 years agp was replaced by self service machines, information desk and adult fiction books. Lastly, the lecture room in the plan now was the children's books room 20 years ago.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify several important changes, including the removal of the central tables and chairs, the addition of a café and lecture room, and the relocation of adult fiction. The overview also recognises that the plan has changed substantially. However, some comparisons are inaccurate or unclear: the room with sofas was not where computer games were played; it was the former children’s-books room, while the CDs, videos and computer games room became the children’s-fiction/storytelling room. The statement that no original locations were maintained is also too broad, since the entrance remains at the bottom centre and some areas retain their general positions. Cover the main changes more precisely, including the new storytelling room and the former reading room’s conversion to a computer room.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a summary of major changes, and separate descriptions of the left and right sides. This makes the comparison reasonably easy to follow, and phrases such as “On the left side” and “On the right side” help orient the reader. However, the progression within the overview is somewhat list-like, and some references are not sufficiently precise. For example, “the room with the sofas” and “the computer games” require the reader to infer which rooms are meant. The final paragraph also combines several right-side changes without a clear sequence. Organise details consistently by side or by former-to-current use, and use explicit room labels to strengthen cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing a plan, including “floor plan,” “maintained,” “replaced,” and “section.” These choices communicate the main comparisons, but some wording is imprecise or unnatural, such as “the room with the sofas was where the computer games were played” and “the adult non fiction place.” Spelling errors, including “libary,” “completley,” and “agp,” also reduce accuracy. In addition, “cafe” and “self service” would be clearer in standard written form as “café” and “self-service.” Aim for precise labels from the diagram and use natural collocations such as “was converted into” or “was replaced by.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the relative clause in “which was previously the reading room” and the contrast in “despite changing the location.” Most sentences are understandable, and grammatical errors rarely prevent the reader from following the comparison. Some sentence patterns are awkward or incomplete, however. “Tables and chairs section was completely removed” needs an article (“The tables and chairs section…”), while “On the right side of the entrance is where the cafe is today” uses an unnecessarily cumbersome structure. The sentence “The adult non fiction place 20 years ago was replaced by…” also has an unclear grammatical relationship between the former area and its new contents. Use direct subject–verb constructions and check articles and punctuation.
