IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows the floor plan of a public library 20 years ago and how it looks now.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram compares the number of changes undergone by a central library 20 years ago and how it looks today.

Overall, a significant number of transfromations can be seen, including the modifications of cildren's books to lecture room, CDs and computer games to storytelling area, shift of adult fiction from left to right side, removal of tables and chairs, and an addition of a cafeteria.

Looking into the detailed information, firstly, the CDs, videos, and computer games section has been shifted from the North to the South side of library, and a new section for storytelling events and children's fiction books, with sofas have been made in that area. Moreover, the space occupied for adult fiction books is now being replaced by all reference books, and the adult fiction has been tranferred to the North-East side of library.

Furthermore, the corner for children's books has been modified into a lecture room. In contrast, a new cafe has been built in the South corner close to the entrance. However, the manual enquiry system is being replaced by self-service machines. Finally, tables and chairs have been removed.

In conclusion, a series of transformation has made library more modern and convenient.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You provide a clear overview of several major changes, including the removal of the central tables and chairs, the new café, and the relocation of adult fiction. Most comparisons are relevant, but some details are inaccurate or unclear: the CDs/videos/computer-games room was at the top left and is now the children’s fiction/storytelling room, not simply shifted from north to south; the new lecture room replaced the children’s books room, while the café is in the bottom-right corner rather than a general “South corner close to the entrance.” The enquiry desk is replaced by an information desk and self-service machines, so describing this only as a change from a “manual enquiry system” is imprecise. Develop the spatial comparisons more precisely and avoid unsupported claims such as the library becoming more convenient.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by paragraphs describing specific changes, with a concluding sentence. Sequencing expressions such as “Overall,” “Moreover,” “Furthermore,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the account. This organisation is effective, though some linking is mechanical, and the final “In conclusion” repeats the overview rather than adding useful information. There are also moments when the relationships between changes are not fully clear—for example, the first detailed paragraph combines the former media room, the new storytelling area, and the adult-fiction relocation. Grouping changes by side of the plan or by former and current use, and using clearer references to locations, would make progression more precise and cohesive.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a plan, including “modifications,” “replaced,” “transferred,” and “self-service machines.” These choices allow you to report the main changes, and the meaning is generally clear. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “number of changes undergone by a central library” is awkward, “shifted from the North to the South side” does not accurately describe the room’s position, and “manual enquiry system” is not the most precise label for the former desk. There are also spelling errors, including “transfromations,” “cildren’s,” and “tranferred.” Use standard plan-description language such as “the room was converted into” and check spelling and collocations to improve precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including participial phrases (“including the modifications…”) and contrastive clauses (“In contrast…”). Most sentences communicate the intended changes, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “with sofas have been made” has an incorrect verb construction; write “and sofas were added.” In “the space occupied for adult fiction books is now being replaced,” the tense and passive construction are awkward for describing a completed change; “the former adult-fiction area is now used for reference books” is clearer. There are also article and number issues in “a series of transformation” and “South side of library.” More consistent past and present forms, alongside careful checking of agreement and articles, would strengthen accuracy.
