Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given diagrams shows the layout of Central Public Library 20 years ago and how it appears now.

Overall, from the last 20 years the library has completely changed it floor plan with certain new addition to its layout.

Starting from the entrance of the new layout of library, to the right is a cafe area which was previously an enquiry desk area. To the opposite side of cafe is located a computer lab which replaced a room made previously for reading. Also, the central tables and chairs section in the centre is nowhere in the new plan.

Adjacent to cafe is an area concised as information desk with self-service machine. Adult fiction books are also located here. Moving further towards north is the lecture room the library which was previously an area for children books. Just adjacent to the computer room in a place for all reference books which replaced the adult fiction books in the new layout. Moving further towards north is a room designed for storytelling with sofas and children's fictional book section. This section previously contained all the CD's, videos and computer game area in the older layout.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main change clearly: the library has been substantially reorganised, and you compare several former and current uses. For example, you correctly link the old reading room with the new computer room, the former children’s-books room with the lecture room, and the old CDs/videos area with the storytelling and children’s-fiction room. This covers the task well, and the overview gives the reader a broad sense of the transformation. However, some important changes are omitted or unclear: the old adult non-fiction area becomes adult fiction, while the former adult-fiction area becomes reference books; the café is new rather than a replacement for the enquiry desk, which is not shown in the current plan. The overview also says the plan has “completely changed,” which overstates the changes. More precise coverage would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a body paragraph that moves through the plan from the entrance towards the back. This gives the reader a basic route through the changes, and phrases such as “Moving further towards north” help signal direction. However, the progression is not always easy to follow because locations and comparisons are compressed into long, loosely connected sentences. For instance, “Adjacent to cafe is an area concised as information desk with self-service machine” does not clearly establish the relationship between the desk, machines, and adult-fiction area. Some linking phrases are also repetitive, particularly “Moving further towards north” and “Just adjacent.” Grouping changes by side or by former-to-current use, and using clearer reference, would make the organisation more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing a floor plan, including “layout,” “replaced,” “adjacent,” “self-service machine,” and “storytelling.” These choices help communicate the main transformations. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward, which limits precision: “an area concised as information desk” is not a natural way to describe the space, and “computer lab” and “computer room” are not the label shown in the plan. “Children’s fictional book section” is also less natural than “children’s fiction books.” There are spelling and form issues such as “cafe” and “CD’s,” and “new addition to its layout” is imprecise. Aim to use the plan’s labels accurately and choose natural collocations for describing locations and facilities.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview clause “from the last 20 years…” and comparisons using “which replaced.” The main meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors recur. The opening should be “The given diagrams show,” not “shows,” and “it floor plan” needs a possessive form (“its floor plan”). In “To the opposite side of cafe is located a computer lab,” the inversion and article use make the sentence awkward; a clearer structure would be “Opposite the café is the computer room.” The phrase “Just adjacent to the computer room in a place for all reference books” is incomplete and lacks a clear verb. Check subject–verb agreement, articles, possessives, and complete sentence structure, especially when combining several comparisons.
