Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The layouts compare the ground floor plan of a public library now and 20 years ago.

Overall, the basic layout of both the plans remained neraly same over the years. The major change is the removal of central table and chair in present layout. However, in present layout, the noteable change is the introduction of a cafe and the self service machines.

In current plan, the central tables and chairs along with adult non fiction books have been removed. The enquiry desk has been relocated at the right hall area and that area is occupied by the newly introduced cafe. The reading room has been occupied by the computer room.

In addition to that, the children book area is switched by the lecture room and the CDs, videos and games area at right of children book area earlier is converted to the children fiction books area furnished with sofas. The adult fiction books area is occupied by the all reference books area and is shifted to right hall area ahead of the information desk. The self service area machines are placed at back of information desk.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main overall changes, especially the removal of the central tables and chairs and the addition of a café and self-service machines. You also cover most of the key room changes, including the former reading room becoming a computer room and the former adult-fiction area becoming the reference section. This gives the response a relevant, reasonably broad account of the plans. However, the overview that the basic layout “remained nearly same” is too general, since several areas changed function or position. Some details are also unclear or inaccurate: the enquiry desk is not simply relocated to the café area, and the self-service machines are in the adult-fiction area, rather than behind the information desk. More precise comparisons and a clearer summary of the overall reorganisation would strengthen the report further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the current arrangement and room changes. This makes the comparison easy to follow in broad terms, and phrases such as “Overall” and “In addition to that” help signal progression. However, the sequence of details is not always easy to track. The sentence beginning “In addition to that” combines several changes, and the reference to the children’s books and the former CDs area is particularly difficult to interpret. Some linking is also mechanical, while “In current plan” and “In present layout” repeat the same framing. Grouping changes by side of the plan or by former and current use, and using clearer references, would make the progression more controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing a floor plan, including “relocated,” “occupied,” “introduction,” and “converted.” These choices help communicate changes in function and location, and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, several spelling errors, such as “neraly” and “noteable,” and some phrases are imprecise or awkward. For example, “the basic layout … remained nearly same” does not accurately capture the extent of the changes, while “self service area machines” is unclear. “Children book area” and “right hall area” also lack precision. Aim for accurate collocations and consistent labels from the plan, such as “children’s books section” and “self-service machines”; this would make the description more precise and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including comparisons and passive constructions such as “The reading room has been occupied by the computer room.” The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Articles and possessives are often missing, as in “removal of central table and chair” and “children book area”; the overview also needs “the” before “same.” There are tense and sentence-boundary issues, including “In current plan” and the missing space after “layout.” The long sentence beginning “The adult fiction books area…” is difficult to parse because its clauses and locations are not clearly structured. Check articles, plurals, and punctuation, and divide complex descriptions into shorter, complete sentences.
