Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 5.0)

There are two construction diagrams illustrates the changes of the floor plan of the central library before and after 20 years ago.

Overall, therer we can see a quite changes in the floor plan. One particular corner room is more spacious than previous plan to create less space in the center area.

The four corner rooms are get larger than the past and change the direction of the doors. The room which is located in the bottom right corner is reshaped. All the rooms form the past there were specific reason to use now, the purposes are changed too.

In the past there were two tables and chairs in the middle of the library which are removed and to create more space in the middle. However, A ling table and chairs are introduce at the right side of the floor. The storytelling event happens in children's fiction room which is bigger room than previous room in the same place and also add two sofas.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify several relevant changes, including the removal of the central tables and the new storytelling area with sofas. However, the response only partially reports the plan: it omits major changes such as the new lecture room, computer room, café, information desk and self-service machines, as well as the relocation or renaming of book sections. The overview is also unclear and partly inaccurate: “one particular corner room is more spacious” and “the four corner rooms are get larger” are not supported by the plan, and the central area is not described as being made smaller. The claim about a “long table and chairs” on the right is also not shown. Select the main changes accurately and give a clear overview of how the library’s functions were reorganised.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details about the rooms and central area. This gives the reader some organisation, and “In the past” and “However” attempt to signal comparison. However, progression is limited: the second and third paragraphs make broad claims before the final paragraph gives only a few specific changes. Some links are unclear, particularly “All the rooms form the past there were specific reason to use now,” which makes the relationship between past and present difficult to follow. Organise the report by comparing corresponding areas or by grouping the main changes, and use clear references such as “the former reading room” to connect details.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant plan vocabulary, including “floor plan,” “corner room,” “central area,” “storytelling event” and “sofas,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning difficult to interpret. For example, “construction diagrams” is not a natural description of these plans, “quite changes” is unclear, and “the purposes are changed too” is imprecise. There are also spelling and word-form problems, such as “therer” and “introduce.” Use precise verbs for map changes—such as “was converted into,” “was relocated” and “was replaced by”—and check spelling and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

There are attempts to use longer sentences and comparisons, but control is weak and errors occur throughout. The opening, “There are two construction diagrams illustrates,” combines incompatible verb forms; “the floor plan … before and after 20 years ago” also has an unclear time construction. Agreement and tense are inconsistent in “The four corner rooms are get larger” and “A ling table and chairs are introduce.” Sentence boundaries and capitalisation are also unreliable, as in “However, A ling table…”. These errors make several statements hard to understand. Practise accurate past-tense descriptions of changes and build longer sentences from a clear subject and verb, for example, “The central tables were removed, while a café was added in the southeast corner.”
