IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows the floor plan of a public library 20 years ago and how it looks now.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.5)

These figures compare the map of a governmental library from now to 20 years ago.

Overall, the library has significantly changed over the period of 20 years. The previous sections are replaced by new ones, such as storytelling events, lecture room, computer room and cafe. There is also an addition of new areas, such as all reference books, self-service machines and information desk, especially in the hall of library.

The existing computer games and children's books areas are replaced by newly constructed storytelling and lecture room respectively. In addition, the adult fiction books have been completely removed in the new library plan, while adult fiction books have shifted from left to right side of the hall along with the addition of information desk and self serving machine. A new section of all reference books has been added on left side of the hall, where the adult fiction books used to be previously.

Some funiture, including some tables and chairs, has been removed from center of hall to make some room. Furthermore, the equiry desk section has been replaced by a new cafe infront of computer area at the entrance of library.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You give a clear overview of substantial change and identify several major additions, including the storytelling area, lecture room, computer room, café, reference books and self-service facilities. The comparisons are generally grounded in the plans, and you correctly note the removal of the central tables and chairs and the relocation of adult fiction. However, some details are inaccurate or imprecise: adult fiction was not completely removed, but moved from the left to the right; the café occupies the former enquiry-desk area, rather than being described as in front of the computer area; and the former children’s-books room becomes a lecture room, while the storytelling area replaces the CDs/videos/games room. More precise descriptions of these changes would make the account more consistently accurate and fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction and overview are followed by paragraphs describing changes to the rooms and central areas. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In addition,” and “Furthermore” help signal relationships between points, and the reader can follow the main comparison. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent overall arrangement. Some connections are less clear, however: “The previous sections are replaced by new ones” is broad, and the later sentence about adult fiction being “completely removed” conflicts with the explanation that it shifted to the right. Grouping changes by location or by old-to-new function, and using clearer references to the two plans, would strengthen cohesion and provide more consistently logical progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a floor plan, including “replaced,” “shifted,” “addition,” and “section,” and the main changes remain understandable. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “self serving machine” and “constructed storytelling and lecture room.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “figures” is not suitable for maps, “governmental library” is unsupported by the task, and “make some room” is vague. Spelling errors in “funiture,” “equiry,” and “infront,” together with “cafe” and “self serving,” reduce precision. Use standard forms such as “furniture,” “enquiry desk,” “in front,” “café,” and “self-service machines,” and choose more exact map-description vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “while,” “where,” and “such as,” and most sentences communicate the intended comparison. Some grammatical errors remain, but they rarely prevent understanding. For example, “These figures compare the map” has a number mismatch, while “from now to 20 years ago” is an awkward time construction; “over the period of 20 years” would be more natural as “over the 20-year period.” The sentence beginning “The existing computer games and children’s books areas” also has an unclear plural structure, and “adult fiction books have shifted from left to right side” needs articles and clearer phrasing. Review articles, agreement, and sentence construction to improve accuracy while retaining your complex structures.
