Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The represented diagrams illustrate the change made to a public library before 20 years and how it looks today.

Overall, by thoroughly analyzing the pictorial diagrams it is observed that a massive change has been done to library, in which many facilities are relocated, whereas few were newly introduced.

20 years ago, people was provided with table and chair facility which was at the center of library, however it is removed today. Toward left of table and chairs a corridor was there where adult fiction books were arranged. In these corridor the room toward entrance was made dedicated for reading room especially for newspaper and magazines. Whereas, on opposite side of this room, there was room for computer games, videos and CDs. In current time, the adult books arranged in corridor was replaced by all reference books. Reading room was converted into computer room and the area which was used for games and videos is changed to storytelling events.

The area toward left side of tables and chairs before 20 years, have same corridor with non- fictional book arranged in it. This area now has been replaced with multiple facilities such information desk, self-service machines along with adult fiction books. 20 years ago there was enquiry desk on the left of entrance and children's books near adult non- fiction books. In current time both these room serve different purpose, while enquiry desk is converted to cafe desk, the room with children's books is replaced by lecture room.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You give a clear overview that the library has undergone substantial change, and you report several important transformations accurately: the central tables and chairs have been removed, the former reading room is now a computer room, and the children’s-books room has become a lecture room. The main comparisons are relevant and cover both sides of the plan. However, a few details are misreported: the storytelling-events room was formerly for CDs, videos and computer games, not simply “games and videos”; the enquiry desk is now a café, not a “cafe desk”; and the former children’s-books room is described as being near adult non-fiction, although it was in the separate upper-right room. More precise location descriptions and a clearer account of the new children’s fiction area would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable progression: an introduction and overview are followed by comparisons of the left and right sides of the plan. Time markers such as “20 years ago” and “In current time” help readers follow the changes, and the main information is generally grouped by location. Some links, however, are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Whereas, on opposite side of this room” does not clearly identify which room is meant, and “The area toward left side of tables and chairs” repeats the earlier left-side discussion rather than establishing a clear new section. The repeated use of “area” and “room” also weakens cohesion. Use more precise references and organise the details consistently by side or by type of change.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for describing a floor plan, including “relocated,” “converted,” “replaced,” “corridor,” and “self-service machines.” These choices allow you to communicate most changes, and some less common terms show an attempt at precision. However, several word combinations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “change made to a public library before 20 years,” “table and chair facility,” and “cafe desk.” “Non- fictional” is also not the appropriate form in this context; use “non-fiction books.” Repetition of “area,” “room,” and “changed” limits flexibility. Aim for standard map-description collocations such as “20 years ago,” “seating area,” and “was converted into a café,” while keeping labels faithful to the diagram.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “whereas,” “which,” and “while,” and the overall meaning is usually understandable. However, errors in agreement, articles, tense, and sentence construction recur. For example, “people was provided” should be “people were provided with,” while “a massive change has been done to library” needs an article and a more suitable verb construction. The sentence beginning “In these corridor” has a number-agreement error, and “The area … have same corridor” also has faulty agreement and article use. Some long sentences combine several comparisons without clear grammatical control. Practise accurate past-versus-present forms and build complex sentences around one clear comparison at a time.
