Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify several relevant changes, including the removal of the central tables and chairs, the addition of a computer room and café, and the replacement of the western adult-fiction area with reference books. However, the account is only partly complete and some details are unclear or inaccurate. For example, the northern room that becomes a lecture room was previously the children’s-books room, while the former CDs, videos and games room becomes children’s fiction and a storytelling space; this major change is not reported. The current adult-fiction area and its information desk and self-service machines are also omitted. The overview describes redevelopment but does not clearly summarise the main pattern of changes. Select the most significant conversions and describe them precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has an opening, an overview and two body paragraphs, and it generally moves from the former layout to the current one. This gives the reader a basic framework. However, progression within the paragraphs is difficult to follow because locations and changes are sometimes mixed together, as in “on north side up corener” and “directly opposite to west on east south down side.” Linking words such as “Moreover,” “Furthermore” and “Finally” help signal additions, but they do not always clarify how features relate spatially or chronologically. Some references, including “the two things,” are vague. Organise the description by areas or by clear before-and-after comparisons, and use precise location phrases to make the sequence easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “layout,” “redevelopment,” “replacing,” “removed” and “added,” and you attempt to describe positions and changes. However, the range is limited and several word choices or combinations are unnatural, which sometimes makes the meaning hard to interpret. For instance, “entrence road” does not accurately describe the central corridor, and “added existing features upgraded enhance the view of location” is unclear. Spelling errors such as “fllor,” “entrence” and “corener” also reduce accuracy. Build a more precise set of terms for map descriptions, including “corridor,” “enclosed room,” “open area,” “relocated” and “converted into.” Check spelling and use standard collocations when describing changes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
There are attempts to use longer sentences and contrast, for example, “However, the main entrence road between north and south there was Tables and chair in middle.” Yet many sentences have faulty structure, and the reader must often infer the intended relationship. The past-tense description is inconsistent, with forms such as “there was” used where plural features require “there were,” while the present-day changes are described through incomplete constructions such as “it add lecture room.” Articles, prepositions and sentence boundaries are also frequently problematic. Practise building clear subject–verb sentences, then combine them with accurate clauses using “while” or “whereas.” For example: “The former reading room has been replaced by a computer room.”
