Central Library 20 years ago
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates changes in central library floor plan's over the time period of 20 years.
Overall, the floor underwent significant changes. Some rooms was replaced and other changed the location. Earlier it was just a library but later it added a place for recreation as a cafe.
Looking more closely to details, the room with the CDs, video and computer games north-east corner is now converted into a story telling room with a addition of kids fictional books. Likewise, the room specific for the children's book is replaced by a lecture room. A cafe is added as a place of fun for kids on the south-west corner of floor and enquiry desk is moved adjacent to cafe.
Additionally, self service machines are added on information desk along with adult fiction books. Reading room became a computer and all reference books are moved in one point opposite to information desk. Table and chairs are removed from center hall way of library.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify several important changes, including the removal of the central tables and chairs, the addition of a café and computer room, and the relocation of book sections. The overview also recognises that the plan has changed substantially. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the former CDs room was in the top-left, not the north-east, and the café is in the bottom-right, not the south-west. The enquiry desk is not moved beside the café; it is replaced by the adult-fiction area, information desk and self-service machines. The café is not specifically described as a place for children. Your account covers the main transformation, but these misreadings and the limited comparison of the new layout keep some features from being fully and precisely reported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a brief overview and paragraphs describing specific changes. Sequencing terms such as “Overall,” “Likewise” and “Additionally” help signal how the information is organised, and the reader can follow the broad comparison between the two plans. However, the progression is not always clear because several changes are compressed into long sentences, particularly the sentence beginning “A cafe is added.” The phrase “all reference books are moved in one point opposite to information desk” also leaves the spatial relationship difficult to interpret. Grouping changes by area or by function, and using clearer references to the earlier and current plans, would make the comparisons more cohesive and precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing a plan, including “replaced,” “converted,” “adjacent,” “self service machines” and “opposite.” These choices help communicate changes in use and location. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “story telling room” and “central hall way,” though some are inaccurate or unnatural in this context. “A place of fun for kids” is an imprecise description of the café, while “moved in one point” does not express the location naturally. Spelling and word formation also need attention in “cafe” and “fictional books.” More consistent use of standard map vocabulary and accurate collocations would improve precision without requiring a much wider vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including comparisons with “Likewise” and “Additionally,” and most of the intended meaning remains understandable. However, some grammatical errors recur. In the overview, “Some rooms was replaced and other changed” has agreement and verb-form problems; “the floor plan’s” uses an unnecessary possessive, and “with a addition” has an article error. The sentence “Reading room became a computer” also needs a clearer grammatical construction to show that it was converted into a computer room. Articles, plurals and prepositions are inconsistent, as in “on information desk” and “in one point.” More careful editing of these patterns, alongside varied but controlled sentence structures, would strengthen accuracy.
