Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The diagram illustrates how the floor plan of a public central library has changed over 20 years and how it currently looks like.

Overall, the area became more modernised with the development of a confectionary area and technology.

In the northern side, major developments took place such as the children's book room in north-east was replaced by a lecture room whereas the CDs and video games section is now utilized for storytelling events with the addition of sofas in the corners and children's fiction books. Regarding the middle of the library, tables and chairs were completely removed while the Adult fiction books on both left and right most side were combined to the east side with the addition of information desk and self service machines.

With respect to the west side, all reference books replaced adult fiction books whereas in south east of the library, enquiry desk was renamed to information desk and placed in the area right above it and a cafe with a rectangular area was constructed. Reading room at south west was completely converted into a computer room.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You identify the main transformation clearly: the central tables and chairs were removed, the former reading room became a computer room, and new facilities such as a lecture room and café appeared. The north–south and east–west comparisons also make the changes easy to follow. However, a few details are inaccurate or imprecise. The children’s books room in the north-east became a lecture room, but the CDs and games room became children’s fiction and storytelling space; it was not simply “utilized for storytelling events.” The former adult-fiction area on the left became reference books, while adult fiction is now on the right. Also, the enquiry desk was replaced by an information desk in the adult-fiction area, rather than merely renamed and moved above its former position. A more precise overview would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction and overview are followed by changes in the northern and central areas, then the western and southern areas. Location-based signposting such as “In the northern side,” “Regarding the middle,” and “With respect to the west side” helps readers navigate the plan. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the comparisons generally follow a logical order. Some linking and reference could be more exact, however. In the final paragraph, “right above it” has an unclear referent, and the shift from the west side to the south-east is abrupt. Grouping the changes consistently by the old and new locations, and using more precise references to each facility, would make the progression smoother and cohesion less dependent on repeated directional phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing changes and locations, including “replaced,” “converted,” “removed,” “constructed,” and “north-east.” These choices communicate the main developments, and the language is varied enough to avoid excessive repetition. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise, though. “Confectionary area” does not describe the new café accurately; “café” or “refreshment area” would be appropriate. “Modernised with the development of … technology” is broad and does not specify the actual facilities. “Utilized for storytelling events” is also awkward for describing a room’s new function, while “right above it” is vague. Aim for precise map vocabulary and natural collocations, such as “was converted into” and “was relocated to the adult-fiction area.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You attempt a range of sentence forms, including complex comparisons with “whereas” and clauses introduced by “while,” and the main meaning remains clear. Some grammatical errors and awkward constructions persist. In the opening, “how it currently looks like” should be “what it currently looks like” or “how it looks now.” “In the northern side” is better expressed as “On the northern side,” and “the children's book room in north-east” needs an article or possessive construction, such as “the room in the north-east.” In “Adult fiction books on both left and right most side were combined,” the plural and comparative structure are faulty; the two areas were not combined, and “rightmost” is one word. Check articles, prepositions, and sentence structure, especially when describing several changes in one sentence.
