Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given diagram compares the floor plan of a public library from 20 years ago to how it appears now. It can be fairly concluded that every portion of library has undergone changes, making it an almost new place after 20 years.

Firstly, it can be authorized that the recent floor plan has been upgraded with lecture room in place of children's book zone, at the right most top corner from the entrance. Secondly the self service machines has been introduced, which was not part of floor plan 20 years back, and is placed above cafe next to entrance, where it used to be an adult non-fiction books zone. Also the enquiry desk is replaced by cafe and reading room is substituted with computer room. Lastly all reference books were placed in position of adult fiction books and the computer, CDs, videos are now converted to childrens's fiction books with sofa.

Overall it can be depicted that recent library floor plan is upgraded version from its 20 years old version with seperate zones for children and adults , moreover the cafe and self-service machines has secured a prominent place upto the requirements of mordern society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify several major changes, including the new lecture room, computer room and café, and the removal of the central tables and chairs is also a notable change to report. Your comparisons are generally relevant, but some details are inaccurate or unclear: the lecture room replaced the former children’s-books room, not simply a zone described as “children’s book”; the café occupies the former adult non-fiction area, while the enquiry desk was replaced by the adult fiction area with an information desk and self-service machines. The claim that all reference books took the place of adult fiction is also imprecise, as they occupy the former adult fiction section on the left. The overview recognises extensive change, but “almost a new place” and “upgraded” are evaluative rather than neutral. More precise coverage of the main layout changes would strengthen the summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable introduction, a sequence of comparisons and a concluding overview, so the reader can follow its general direction. “Firstly,” “Secondly” and “Lastly” help signal the order of points, but the sequence is somewhat mechanical and the final overview repeats the idea that the library has been upgraded. Some sentences combine several changes, making relationships between locations harder to track; for example, the sentence beginning “Also the enquiry desk…” moves quickly between the café and computer room without clearly identifying the corresponding former areas. Grouping changes by side or section of the plan, and using clearer references such as “in the former reading-room area,” would improve progression and cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of vocabulary suited to describing change, including “introduced,” “replaced,” “substituted” and “prominent place.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for a neutral map summary: “it can be authorized” does not express the intended meaning, and “upgraded version” adds an unsupported judgement. There are also spelling and form issues, such as “seperate,” “mordern” and “childrens's,” alongside inconsistent forms such as “self service.” These do not prevent the main message from being understood, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Prefer straightforward, accurate terms such as “located,” “converted into” and “now contains,” and check spelling and hyphenation carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple statements and longer sentences with clauses, as in “The given diagram compares…” and the sentence beginning “Secondly…,” showing some range. The main comparisons are usually understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “the self service machines has been introduced” has subject–verb disagreement, and “every portion of library” needs an article. The phrase “where it used to be an adult non-fiction books zone” has an unclear grammatical reference, while “all reference books were placed in position of adult fiction books” needs clearer article use and sentence construction. Aim to keep each comparison in a complete, direct sentence, and check agreement, articles and plural forms when revising.
