Central Library 20 years ago
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagram illustrates the changes which have done in Central Library between 20 years ago and now.
Overall, the floor plan underwent considerable development during this period, particularly in terms of public facilities and arrangements. The most notable changes are the introduction of the lecture room and computer rooms, the establishment of some modern facilities and the removal of tables and chairs from the middle.
Twenty years ago, a children's books room and an enquiry desk (for tickets, book returns etc.) were seen on the top and bottom right corners of the map, while two audit non-fiction were on the right and left sides. A reading room to read newspapers and magazines and a room for CDs, videos, and computer games were noticed on the bottom and top left corners, whereas there were two tables ans some chairs in the middle.
Currently, the floor become more developed due to modern facilities. Children's books room and enquiry desk have been replaced by a lecture and a cafe, respectively, while an information desk and three self-service machines have been set between them. On the left side, a computer room has been introduced on the bottom corner and a large children's fiction books section is constructed on the top corner with some sitting facilities for storytelling events. On the other hand, the chairs and tables have been removed from the middle of the floor.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You provide a clear overview of the library’s redevelopment and identify several major changes, including the new lecture room, computer room and café, the removal of the central tables and chairs, and the addition of self-service machines. Most locations and comparisons are relevant. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the old plan had adult fiction on the left and adult non-fiction on the right, not “two audit non-fiction” on both sides. The current plan also has all reference books on the left, a change you do not mention, and the former CDs/media room is now the children’s fiction and storytelling area. Your overview is useful, but fuller and more precise coverage of these changes would make the report more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is organised into an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs comparing the earlier and current layouts. This gives the reader a generally clear route through the information, and phrases such as “Twenty years ago” and “Currently” help signal the time contrast. The final paragraph also groups several present-day changes by location. At times, however, the comparisons are difficult to follow because several features are packed into long sentences, especially the sentence beginning “Children’s books room and enquiry desk…”. Some linking phrases, such as “On the other hand,” do not express a clear contrast in that context. Use shorter, location-based comparisons and clearer references to the old and new rooms to make progression more consistently smooth.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing change and layout, including “underwent considerable development,” “introduction,” “replaced,” and “self-service machines.” These choices help convey the main developments, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “changes which have done,” “two audit non-fiction,” “were noticed,” and “a large … section is constructed” do not describe the plan naturally. “Modern facilities” is also broad where naming the café, computer room or machines would be more precise. Aim for standard map-description language such as “was converted into,” “is located,” and “was added,” and check spelling, as in “chairs” rather than “ans.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “while” and “whereas,” and the overall meaning can usually be followed. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in verb forms and tense: “changes which have done” should be “changes that have taken place,” and “the floor become” should be “the floor has become” or “the floor plan has changed.” There are also problems with articles and number, as in “a children’s books room,” and with sentence construction in “two audit non-fiction were.” The long sentence beginning “Children’s books room and enquiry desk…” would benefit from clearer parallel structure. More consistent past-tense descriptions for the former plan and present-tense descriptions for today would improve accuracy.
