The diagram below shows the floor plan of a public library 20 years ago and how it looks now.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Central Library 20 years ago

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two diagrams compare the floor plan of a public library 20 years ago and how it looks now.

Overall, the design of the library has been completely revamped. The positioning of different types of books section has been changed completely. A new cafe , a lecture room and a computer room has been added in the new design of the library. While the enquiry desk and the reading room has been changed in this new plan of library.

The library had a set of two tables and eight chairs in front of enterance gate. To the left of the enterance gate there was a reading room with newspapers and magazines. To the right of enterance there was an enquirey desk for tickets booking and books returning. The top left of the library had computer games room with CDs and videos, whereas the top right section was allocated for childern's books. In the middle of both sides we had adult fiction books and adult non-fiction books section.

After 20 years , the tables and chairs have been removed from the new design. To the left of the enterance , there is a computer room and to the right there is a cafe for readers. The childern fictional books section has been moved to top left with 2 sofas. A new lecture room has been added to the top right. In the middle of cafe and lecture there is a information desk with self-service machines and adult fictional books section. Last but not least , all reference books section has been added in the middle of computer room and childern's fictional books section.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover both plans and identify the main transformation: the central tables and chairs disappear, while a café, lecture room and computer room are introduced. You also report several key relocations, including children’s fiction moving to the top left and reference books occupying the middle-left area. The overview is relevant, though “completely revamped” and “changed completely” overstate the changes: some areas remain in broadly similar positions, and the enquiry desk is replaced by an information desk and self-service machines rather than simply being changed. Some details are less precise, such as describing the old top-left room as a “computer games room” instead of a room for CDs, videos and games. A more selective, accurate overview and clearer comparison of the book sections would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear four-paragraph structure: an introduction and overview, followed by descriptions of the earlier and current layouts. The chronological organisation makes the comparison easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “whereas,” “After 20 years” and “Last but not least” help connect details. However, some cohesion is mechanical or imprecise. Repeating “to the left” and “to the right” without consistently anchoring these positions to the entrance can make the layout harder to visualise, while “While the enquiry desk…” is an incomplete dependent clause. The final paragraph also lists features without consistently showing how they relate spatially. Use clearer location-based grouping and connect the two plans directly when describing corresponding areas.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of vocabulary for describing a library plan, including “positioning,” “allocated,” “removed,” “section” and “self-service machines.” These choices communicate most of the changes, and the topic vocabulary is generally appropriate. However, several word-choice and spelling problems reduce precision: “enterance” and “childern’s” recur, “enquirey desk” is misspelled, and “cafe” needs its accent or can be written as “café.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “tickets booking and books returning” and “children fictional books section.” Aim for accurate collocations and consistent labels from the diagram—for example, “book returns” and “children’s fiction books.” This would make the description more precise and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, including comparisons with “whereas” and time contrasts introduced by “After 20 years.” Most of the layout remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Subject–verb agreement is inconsistent in “A new cafe, a lecture room and a computer room has been added” and “the reading room has been changed”; these plural subjects require “have.” Articles are missing or incorrect in “there is a information desk,” and “in front of enterance gate” needs an article. The sentence beginning “While the enquiry desk…” is a fragment, and punctuation spacing is inconsistent. Check agreement, articles and sentence completeness, while retaining your attempts at complex comparisons.
